Time Warner Cable’s NY1 24/7 News Channel Selects Dalet News Suite and Omneon Platform

Time Warner Cable’s Local News Division has selected Dalet and Omneon for their leading 24-hour news station NY1

Dalet announced today at the HD World Exhibition, held in New York from October 15 – 16, that NY1 News, the flagship news channel for Time Warner Cable’s Local News Division, has selected the Dalet News Suite system as its newsroom and automation system partner and Omneon servers and storage for the leading 24-hour news station. Based in New York City, NY1 covers New York’s five boroughs and is well known in the broadcast industry for combining advanced news-delivery technologies with video journalism: NY1’s reporters not only report but shoot and edit their own stories. The selection of Dalet News Suite along with Panasonic P2 formats and the Omneon Spectrum media servers and MediaGrid storage will put NY1 among one of the most advanced newsgathering and production facilities in the world. The Dalet driven workflow will integrate the entire production, play out and archiving operations, providing a single digital platform and interface for logging and searching materials, editing packages and planning distribution for cable TV, web and eventually mobile networks.

“We want to be on the forefront of advanced newsroom technologies and Dalet is bringing something very interesting to the table in this regards. They are giving us a phenomenally agile system that goes very deep with metadata management and just as wide with production capabilities,” said Joe Truncale, VP Operations and Engineering, NY1. “What is unique with this offering is that Dalet is an editorially driven workflow platform that allows us to integrate the production storage and play out servers of our choice. No separate pools of information, no clunky workarounds – one smooth process from field to broadcast to archive and back again.”

“With nearly 20 years of experience in developing broadcast technology as well long-term relationships with a carefully selected group of partners like Omneon, Apple and Panasonic, Dalet is able to provide very innovative solutions to technology trendsetters like NY1,” said Benjamin Desbois, General Manager, Dalet USA. “Dalet’s enterprise media asset management platform is a flexible editorial engine, ideal for fast production of news content. It is also purpose-built for multiple platform environments such as NY1: supporting production and delivery from SD to HD to web and mobile devices.”

“Leading edge broadcasters like NY1 are looking for the type of comprehensive, best-of-breed solutions that Omneon and Dalet together offer,” said Geoff Stedman, Senior Vice President of Products and Markets for Omneon. “And the scalability and flexibility of Omneon systems in terms of capacity, format support and application integration will allow NY1 to easily grow to meet future business needs.”

NY1 News’ primary format is the hour news wheel. The standard wheel begins with a NY1 Minute, followed by a brief weather forecast and the first group of news reports. NY1’s ‘round-the-clock coverage is supplemented throughout the day with a slate of live news, sports and public affairs programs. The Media Asset Management platform DaletPlus integrates and drives the entire workflow, facilitating the production and playout of the “NY1 Wheel” news format. DaletPlus combines production and play out capabilities with best-of-breed centralized ingest, media management and editing tools.

The new NY1 digital workflow will be based on the Panasonic P2 acquisition format and include Omneon ingest servers with Dalet’s comprehensive logging tools, flexible metadata forms, and fast search and browse engine. A full featured Dalet newsroom system provides editorial tools for planning, rundowns, wires, and scripts. Desktop editing, shot selection and package assembly will be achieved using Dalet MediaCutter. Craft editing and effects work are done in Apple Final Cut Pro edit suites using the Dalet Xtend feature for full workflow integration. Remote collaboration is made realtime thanks to Dalet InterWeb, a web-based portal that brings Dalet News Suite production capabilities to the field and beyond. At the heart of this workflow, Omneon MediaGrid provides shared production storage to all editors, fully integrated and managed by DaletPlus for easy data migration. Dalet OnAir controls video playout via Omneon Spectrum servers as well CGs and teleprompters. Two Omneon MediaDeck integrated media servers will provide back-up news playout under the control of Dalet.
