Euronews had been addressing the region’s need for multilingual programming by providing a single channel of news programming with identical video and English-only graphics delivered to countries with 12 different language versions. Groundbreaking when Euronews had originally launched in 1993, the “Multiplex” approach to broadcasting lacked the ability to adapt programming to the specific needs of individual countries, a limitation for today’s viewers who crave customized content. With multiculturalism as a core value, management sought to better connect global content with local audiences, transforming Euronews into a “Glocal” media brand.

The legacy Euronews infrastructure had limited news to a “one-size-fits-all” with journalists relying on technicians to package non-localized news story with 11 voice-overs. The lack of system integration pushed news air times to an hour or more. To transform the operation, Euronews implemented Dalet’s component-based workflow powered by the Dalet Galaxy Media Asset Management and Orchestration platform, featuring federated editorial tools that empower the 500 journalists and a workflow engine that maximizes and automates complex, custom content delivery operations. The successful Euronews transformation, which saw no change in staff, increased television content production by 100%, feeding its newly launched 12 individual channels fresh content with a local perspective. It also increased Euronews digital content output by 20%, growing its online audiences by 66%.

IBC2018: Key Takeaways from Dalet
I’ve been thinking and reflecting on how to properly characterize this year’s show and the one word that kept surfacing to the top of my mind is audience. While IBC stayed true to its B2B roots, this year’s edition finally put the audience at the very center of every conversation, workflow and applied technology demonstration that you could possibly find across the RAI convention center. Acknowledging the deep market shifts, this year’s show revolved around audiences’ insatiable craving for fresh content and more personalised, immersive experiences on the devices and channels of their choice. For broadcasters and media organizations, it highlighted one thing: the need for greater agility, faster adaptation and collaborative innovation. Not only do media professionals need to think “out of the box” about linear broadcast and traditional consumption formats and devices, but they need to think tactically on how to build meaningful, complementary content experiences. After a four-year stint in New York, bolstering NBC’s flagship news output, its former US president is one year into her next mission: transforming Euronews NBC into ‘a town square for Europe’. Last June NBC took a 25% stake in the Lyon-based news channel, which led to Deborah Turness’ return from across the pond to become the first president of NBC News International and to oversee content for the new Euronews NBC. According to the British journalist and self-confessed Francophile, NBC had been looking for the right vehicle to boost its international profile for some time and Euronews, which broadcasts in 12 languages to around 3.3m viewers, reaching more than 160 countries, fit the bill perfectly.
