Will MediaBins save the world? (hint: probably not, but they’ll greatly simplify your media life!)
I mentioned in a previous blog post that I wanted to spend more time talking about Dalet’s MediaBins, as they can completely transform your production workflow, so let me tell you more… So, what’s a MediaBin? Commonly used in news and sports production workflows, a MediaBin is a collection of media that is attached to a story and travels through its entire lifecycle, through to distribution and archiving. What can I put in my MediaBins? You can store any kind of media that is stored inside your Dalet Library. Audio, video, pictures, a collection of assets, audio and video clips, graphic objects, wires, RSS posts, social media posts, contacts, Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint files, etc.), PDFs, or PDF-ed emails and external web links/objects such as YouTube videos. This collection of media is there to help the journalist and video editors to create their story. Who can feed a MediaBin? Any Dalet user! Usually, you start feeding the MediaBin during the planning phase. Even an event has its MediaBin before it becomes a story. A Planning Editor, for instance, might add a couple of social posts and a wire that are relevant to a particular event. The Chief Editor decides to make it a leading story. Some footage is coming from user-generated content and is attached to the story in addition to the original material via the MediaBin. Then additional material arrives from the field – it is attached to the MediaBin, and so on. Anyone can contribute to the MediaBin, which is also accessible by librarians, so they can also organize archived content into the MediaBin. Even feed recordings can be placed directly in the MediaBin, so there is a connection between what’s coming in, and the story. How I can use a MediaBin? Obviously, you can consult your MediaBin at any time while you work on your story. You can also search for MediaBins and within MediaBins, including filtering. You can open a MediaBin in a video editor, whether Dalet OneCut or Adobe Premiere Pro through Dalet Xtend, so that you can focus on the relevant material (audio, video, images, graphics, …) saving considerable editing time! So not only is the MediaBin a real collaboration entity attached to your story, it can also be used within the extended Dalet ecosystem. And there’s more… Yes! Dalet’s Recommendation Panel brings Artificial Intelligence to help you feed the MediaBin. Thanks to a deep semantic analysis of stories, wires, audio and video transcripts, the Dalet Recommendation Panel suggests media that is not yet stored in your MediaBin. This surfaces content you would have not likely identified before and help you find relevant material for your story much quicker. So there you have it… The Dalet MediaBin brings you speed, efficiency and relevant content so you can create compelling stories. No wonder so many of us at Dalet are enthusiastic about it! In a future blog post, I’ll tell you more about Dalet Recommendations, as we’re working on set of new algorithms that will bring our users a whole new experience – a true game changer… Watch this space! Raoul Cospen Dalet News Market Director
From Dining Room to Newsroom
It’s strange to see how such a small thing, with no friends, no enemies, completely creates the news,” observes Raoul Cospen, Dalet news market director. That Covid-19 has completely dominated the news cycle worldwide isn’t surprising, but it has also transformed how news organisations and journalists are doing their jobs. The bustling newsroom of only a few months ago is a quieter place now. Many news teams are having to work from home-based workstations – which sometimes means a laptop at the kitchen table – and are having to adopt remote and cloud-based tools as a matter of course. RTV Slovenia Expands Partnership with Dalet to Transform End-to-End News Workflows for Radio and TV with Dalet Galaxy five
Dalet, a leading provider of solutions and services for broadcasters and content professionals, today announced that RTV Slovenia will migrate its entire news operations to Dalet Galaxy five. A Dalet radio customer for more than 25 years, Slovenia’s national broadcaster is expanding its partnership with Dalet to include its television news operation. The powerful Dalet Galaxy five platform will serve as the underlying editorial and orchestration solution that manages the broadcaster’s entire news production and distribution workflow for radio and television across the production hub located in Ljubljana and throughout their regional locations in Koper and Maribor. Dalet Galaxy five will also enable RTV’s entire radio production needs. The resulting solution, which was commissioned in collaboration with Dalet Business Partner AVC, will offer a converged environment that standardizes tools and streamlines the entire news operation. The new arrangement will significantly enhance news production efficiencies across all viewing and listening platforms. “We knew that moving to a converged environment would allow us to optimize content and resources, but it was not until the COVID-19 crisis that we realized just how critical this leap forward would be for our future operations. In particular, centralizing our content with standardized tools that drive a consistent user experience on an agile platform with native integrations means that, even in the middle of a crisis, we can continue to operate with maximum efficiency,” explains Igor Kadunc, MBA, Director General, RTV Slovenia. “The adaptability of Dalet Galaxy five will help us better navigate such challenging circumstances in the future while creating a more cohesive media ecosystem in which we produce our news content and radio production more efficiently than ever before.” The new RTV Slovenia workflow features the Dalet Galaxy five enterprise media asset management and editorial platform powered by the Dalet Workflow Engine, Dalet Newsroom Computer System and News Production System, Dalet Social Media Framework, and the Dalet OneCut multimedia editor for on-premises and remote editing. “RTV had previously used Dalet for its radio operations, with social media and TV supported by other products. Providing RTV employees a unified user experience for the entire news operation with Dalet Galaxy five, be it for Radio, TV or social media will enable a connected workflow with easier and more efficient access, sharing, assembly and distribution of content,” comments Johann Zemmour, General Manager EMEA / APAC, Dalet. “This is an ambitious workflow expansion and one that is taking place during the current pandemic. I would like to personally thank RTV’s technical teams for their incredible support, and our professional services team for their dedication to working on this project during a global crisis. We look forward to the official launch.” For more information on Dalet Galaxy five and Dalet solutions, please visit www.dalet.com. NAB 2020 and Beyond - The Need for Safety and Business Continuity
NAB Show is, for many of us, a place to connect and exchange ideas about how we can move the media industry forward in an era of extremely rapid change. Since 1992, Dalet has looked forward to and enjoyed participating in the big show. NAB has given us a wonderful stage where we have unveiled some of our most innovative technology. It also has given us a passionate community where we have forged countless, long-lasting relationships. While we will miss participating in this year's event, we stand 100 percent behind NAB’s decision to cancel. The safety of our family, friends, colleagues and community must always come first. And with that notion, we must pivot our attention to the task of helping the greater community to stay connected, and keep business moving forward. As an international organization with team members across 31 countries, some of which have been severely impacted by COVID-19, we understand first-hand the challenges many are facing. Enabling seamless, digital-first interactions We saw the need for an alternative to physically attending NAB and began planning a few weeks ago ways for our customers, colleagues and partners to connect and engage with us as we introduce new and innovative technology. Our team has planned digital experiences including videos and live streams as well as smaller locally hosted events to ensure all of us can connect as a community in a safe and inclusive environment. Communications detailing our expanded online presence and local events will be distributed in the coming week. On the importance of business continuity Beyond NAB and other events that have been cancelled or postponed, life must go on. However big the current disruption, society will recover and flourish. The creative industries play an enhanced role at times like this. Not only because huge numbers will be self-quarantined and will rely on news to stay informed and consume entertainment to pass the time - but because storytelling is the most powerful way for society to communicate. We have a vital role to play in telling stories at a time like this. Dalet is fully committed to business continuity and is available to its customers and partners. Our global workforce ensures that we can provide a high level of service anywhere, anytime. Both 24/7 customer support and our professional services teams are equipped with the tools and technology to collaborate with customers and configure their solutions remotely across different regions and time zones. And for our customers who may face mobility restrictions due to COVID-19, Dalet offers a suite of remote workflow solutions to ensure your news, entertainment and factual content keeps flowing. We truly hope you and your families will stay safe and healthy, and - within the restrictions you have around you - use all the means you have to keep the creative and broadcast industries working. We’re here to help. Please do stay in touch with us and let us assist with any questions you may have. As we move forward, we will continue to monitor the situation and follow WHO and CDC guidelines to ensure the safety of everyone connected with Dalet. Mexican Media Giant TV Azteca Captivates Viewers Across Digital, Social and Terrestrial Channels with Dalet
Dalet, a leading provider of solutions and services for broadcasters and content professionals, today announced that TV Azteca, Mexico’s leading multimedia conglomerate, has deployed Dalet Galaxy five to reinvigorate the company’s content supply chain and deliver robust programming options faster to its audiences across all traditional, digital and social platforms. The highly popular media group offers a wide range of entertainment programming including, series, live musicals, thematic programs and sports. In addition to the diverse schedule, TV Azteca delivers news 18 hours per day through a network of local stations across the country. “The goal of TV Azteca’s ambitious transformation was to connect the digital content traffic for TV with the digital platforms and deliver to our audiences programming options that encompass the breadth and depth of our news reporting, and the entirety of our outstanding media catalog. Dalet Galaxy five gave us the technical capabilities to build this innovative media production ecosystem, with the workflow acceleration to engage with our audiences in real-time,” explains Pedro Carmona, CTO of TV Azteca. “The project execution was remarkable and the resulting impact immediate. The TV Azteca operation went from a manual process, where on average it took 10 minutes to get content on-air, to near-instant and often automated real-time delivery of content and programs. The benchmark for improved performance was undeniable and provided us the efficiency required to expand program options for our viewers.” Accelerating workflows by a factor of ten, TV Azteca implemented alongside Dalet Galaxy five highly mobile and collaborative production tools such as Dalet OneCut and Dalet WebSpace. The robust solution streamlines content production field to facility, enabling more than 50 journalists to more efficiently prepare stories anywhere in the world. Further fueling the fast-turn workflow are Dalet’s social media connectors which enable users to easily publish content to TV Azteca’s social channels. Seamlessly connected, the integration makes creating and publishing content for Facebook, Twitter and other channels fast and fluid. With several distinct media departments that previously operated in siloed production verticals, TV Azteca powered by Dalet Galaxy five is now fully connected, interweaving workflows from Programs, News, Sports, Archives and Marketing; ensuring content and program information is shared for maximum production and distribution efficiency. Iván Neri, CIO, TV Azteca explains the inefficiencies eliminated by Dalet’s modern workflow design, “We used to manually copy files over from one department to another and this took an enormous amount of time. Dalet Galaxy five automates the entire file migration from transcoding to metadata capture, which is so incredibly important for making content searchable across our archives. Before implementing the Dalet solution, we had duplicates and inconsistencies in content tagging that hindered collaboration and prevented us from maximizing our content’s value. Automating processes and streamlining the workflow allows us to better utilize the rich programming we have stored in our vaults to audiences everywhere in the world.” According to third party consultants hired by TV Azteca, the resulting Dalet-powered media infrastructure reduced production inefficiencies by up to 30% across the operations. “TV Azteca’s approach in designing its new media operations is lightyears ahead,” states Julien Decaix, General Manager Americas, Dalet. “More than overcoming the inefficiencies, they understood that audiences expected to engage with TV Azteca across all platforms and built a highly fluid media ecosystem that enables them to optimize all aspects of production. They now engage their viewers on a deeper level with better and more diverse content options.” For more information on Dalet Galaxy five and Dalet solutions, please visit www.dalet.com. Effortless Content Discovery for Faster News and Richer Stories
As you might remember, the first post of this series focused on how Smart Captions can automate 80% of your captioning and subtitling work, generating additional revenues. We now focus on how Dalet Media Cortex can vastly improve your content discovery experience, helping you unearth valuable content effortlessly. The Pro and Enterprise versions of Dalet Media Cortex introduce users to a unique experience with the Dalet Discovery Panel. The tool is designed to automatically surface recommendations for relevant media within your Dalet Galaxy five system, which is related to the content you are working on. What can discovery search do for me? Well, two things for starters. First, it will search content automatically, based on the context of your story as you type it. Dalet Media Cortex surfaces relevant media that is not currently part of your Story MediaBin. Secondly, it provides entity identification. This means that you’ll get an understanding of certain terms such as people, locations, organizations and events with descriptions, illustrations, and weblinks coming from Bing or Google Knowledge Graph. What’s the functionality behind it? The Dalet Discovery Panel is currently available in Dalet Galaxy five’s Planning Editor and Story Editor, and consists of three parts: Keywords: Dalet Media Cortex suggests a collection of keywords, key phrases and relevant IPTC NewsCodes. These are specific to the recommendations it provides you with. As you continue to write your story, the keywords become more precise. Recommendations: other stories, media or wires are suggested in order of relevance. This section is constantly updated based on suggested keywords. MediaBin (a topic for a separate blog post!): recommendations are tightly integrated into your MediaBin If one of the recommendations is of particular relevance to your story, you can simply tag it to move it from your recommendations list to your MediaBin. What is in it for me? The Dalet Discovery Panel automatically surfaces content that you would not have easily found manually. This allows you to create deeper, richer and more meaningful news stories, with a wider range of sources. An efficient and easy way to maximize the use of your archive! Additionally, it saves you searching time! Consider it an intelligent and complex search query that helps your story evolve… And, the best thing, you didn’t need to scratch your head to build that complex search! When you consider all the stories you may write over a week, automatic discovery will save you hours looking for that elusive content that was essential to your piece! Finally, you stay in control: you can add, delete or modify keywords and IPTC NewsCodes, plus you can pick and choose what recommended content is most suitable for your story. With the Dalet Discovery Panel provided by Dalet Media Cortex, not only you save searching time looking for valuable content, but you also increase your stories’ quality and meaning by bringing in more valuable sources. Dalet Inks Deal to Build World's Most Advanced Multi-platform Newsroom with Leading North American Broadcaster
Dalet, a leading provider of solutions and services for broadcasters and content professionals, has signed a landmark deal with a prominent North American broadcaster to build its next-generation, borderless multi-platform newsroom on Dalet Galaxy five. The broadcaster’s expansive operation is a 24-hour all-encompassing news service that includes four distinct traditional and digital news entities dedicated to delivering breaking news to more than 90 million homes. The digital transformation will leverage advanced Cloud and AI technologies and move all production and distribution operations to the cohesive Dalet Galaxy five platform, a unified Media Asset Management (MAM), Workflow Orchestration and Editorial environment. Frederic Roux, vice president of sales, Americas, Dalet, comments on the multi-workflow advantages Dalet Galaxy five offers: “This particular news network is on air 24/7 and what they must deliver is far more diverse than straightforward news shows. They need to produce studio news programs and documentary-style shows, which are much closer to long-form programming workflows and often feature multi-camera productions. In addition, a new kind of storytelling is required when producing for OTT and digital, which adds complexity to the production chain.” Roux continues, “Dalet Galaxy five is able to facilitate standard news, long-form programming and digital workflows simultaneously. The transition to the platform brings immense efficiency to the operation with limitless options to implement future workflows and iterate quickly with new, digital-first initiatives. The consolidation of systems required to drive these disparate workflows will also help optimize the total cost of ownership for the broadcaster. In this era of fast-changing news consumption behavior, our customers need an agile platform that can adapt quickly to their new business reality. This agility is inherent to the Dalet Galaxy five hybrid architecture.” Based on a modern, video over IP infrastructure that uses the SMPTE 2110 standard, Dalet Galaxy five platform leverages the elasticity of the Cloud and offers federated production capabilities enabling the news network to effectively scale remote bureaus, field resources, and workflows at will. Cognitive services integrated with Dalet Galaxy five will accelerate the metadata enrichment of content archives making news assets easier to discover and readily available for creating deeper news stories across all platforms. Thanks to the hybrid architecture leveraging AWS, Dalet Galaxy five will provide native disaster recovery capability by offloading on-premise capacity to the Cloud when needed and processing scalability. “Today’s audiences crave more detailed news information on the viewing platform of their choice, especially for major sporting and political events,” adds Roux. “Broadcasters need a solution that enables them to deliver that deeper coverage whenever and wherever these events take place and create a content journey that engages audiences across all platforms. Dalet Galaxy five industry-leading remote access and editing provides a seamless news gathering and reporting experience enabling journalists to prepare robust multimedia stories whether they are in the newsroom or in the field on assignment.” Dalet Galaxy five will underpin the entire multi-platform production and delivery workflow, integrating key broadcast systems and propelling game-changing field and bureau workflows with a significantly improved remote editing user experience. Dalet Galaxy five’s orchestration capabilities will facilitate metadata-driven operations that automate complex media processes, distribute tasks and streamline workflows, simplifying the technical hurdles of media handling while simultaneously providing staff greater control over assets and monitoring capacities. New Dalet Cube NG Powers Broadcast Graphics Workflows for Teleticino and IB3
Dalet, a leading provider of solutions and services for broadcasters and content professionals, announced today that Teleticino and IB3 are revamping their broadcast graphics capabilities with the new Dalet CubeNG solution powered by the Brainstorm real-time graphics engine. An Italian-language television channel based in Switzerland, Teleticino provides news and entertainment programming for the Ticino canton region. IB3, public radio and television channel of the Balearic Islands in Spain, caters to local viewers’ traditional broadcast and digital platforms. A core component of the Dalet Galaxy five platform for news workflows, Dalet CubeNG enables Teleticino and IB3 to create dynamic branding that up-levels visual news narratives across traditional, digital and social channels. “With news consumption growth across digital channels and audiences craving image-rich news stories, it’s critical that broadcasters have a connected premium graphics workflow that empowers journalists with tools to add engaging visuals that drive a consistent brand whether they are covering a breaking news event for primetime television or bringing viewers on a content journey across social platforms,” comments Jérémy Krein, Dalet CubeNG Product Manager, Dalet. “With graphics creation and delivery at the heart of the story-centric news workflow, Dalet CubeNG enables a seamless multimedia production experience that is a quantum leap ahead of its predecessor in terms of quality, features and performance. And it’s available today for our Dalet Galaxy five customers.” A major upgrade to the existing Dalet Cube graphics platform, Dalet CubeNG features a redesigned, highly scalable architecture and modern web-based UI. The embedded, high-performance Brainstorm real-time 3D graphics engine expands on-air and file-based graphics capabilities with its support for 4K and user-defined options, added primitives for building 2D and 3D graphics, support for Unicode fonts and languages, and outstanding transition logic. Natively connected to Dalet Galaxy five, Dalet CubeNG propels fast-paced news workflows offering live changes on playback with advanced support for updating behaviors and conditions. Its simple-to-use toolset and templates foster rapid adoption across the newsroom, enabling broadcasters to scale the production and delivery of visually impactful, on-brand news packages across all traditional and digital channels. As the Dalet Galaxy five media asset management control layer tracks every graphic object, staff, including journalists, can search on any and every graphic element, making it easy to collaborate and repurpose material. The robust Dalet API enables extensible workflows and services that extend the graphics production and delivery capabilities. Krein elaborates on the need to have a tightly integrated graphics component, “Clients like Teleticino, who already rely on Dalet Galaxy five for editorial management and process orchestration realize the workflow advantages that seamless integration brings. Dalet CubeNG eliminates the shortcomings of a multi-vendor graphics integration, facilitating full access and control over premium graphical elements within a workflow framework they are already familiar with. Further, as an existing customer, Dalet has an understanding of Teleticino specific needs which is combined with years of experience in designing solutions and workflows for global newsmakers. The combination of fully integrated premium graphics designed by a partner who understands your needs backed by decades of experience ensures a best of breed graphics workflow.” Combined with Dalet Galaxy five, Dalet CubeNG offers a single-vendor solution that eliminates integration and deployment challenges and lowers cost of ownership. The Recipe for Smart Captions with Dalet Media Cortex
Why caption? Why subtitle? Because a large chunk of your audience either needs or prefers to watch video reading text without sound. Subtitles and captions are an essential part of business for any media organization who wants to reach the widest possible audience, for a multitude of reasons: legal requirements, international distribution, accessibility.... Captions provide a textual representation of dialogue and other important audio for people with hearing loss. They also give the viewer additional information about the video, such as context for a news clip. Subtitles provide a translation of the dialogue, essential to reach international markets. So, we all agree captions and subtitles are key, but... creating them is hard. First, you need solid speech-to-text transcription so that the right words are created from the audio stream. As many of us who have been working with this technology for a while quickly learnt, this is not enough. There is the complicated business of correctly segmenting, laying the text out, punctuation, timing and so on, often creating much manual work for captioning and subtitling teams. What if you could be smart about captioning and subtitling? What if you had a technology solution that automates most of these editorial decisions applying artificial intelligence to the output of a good speech-to-text engine? Enter Dalet Media Cortex. Over the last few months, our teams have worked tirelessly to improve the quality of our Smart Captions, part of the Dalet Media Cortex Speech service, providing users with high-quality automatic captions and subtitles for their video content. If you are using the Dalet Media Cortex API, Smart Captions will be delivered to you in the form of SRT or TTML files. If you are using Dalet Media Cortex integrated with Dalet Galaxy five or the Ooyala Flex Media Platform, captions will also be displayed as timecoded locators so that users can search and navigate through subtitles and captions easily. What is so special about Smart Captions? We have developed algorithms based on speech density, natural language processing and speaker diarization (the process of partitioning an input audio stream into homogeneous segments according to the speaker identity) to generate captions and subtitles that are as close as possible to the BBC Subtitle Guidelines. This takes care of essential elements in captioning and subtitling: such as text that flows well and is synchronized with the speakers’ voice and cadence, lines that split at natural points based on sentence structure and text length that is properly adjusted to screen size. How does this help you? Beyond the improved quality of these AI-generated subtitles and captions, there are immediate and tangible benefits. You will see the time you spent in adjusting subtitles or captions cut in half, when compared to traditional speech-to-text based solutions. You don’t have an automatic captioning/subtitling system today? Good news: you will save over 80% of your time in generating quality captioning and subtitles for your video content. Besides, having great captions and subtitles will increase the value of your media, and bring you new business opportunities, such as expanding to new markets or increase your online and social media engagement. No doubt Smart Captions is one of the multiple differentiators that makes Dalet Media Cortex an "IBC Best of Show Award” winner. Want to know more? Get in touch with the Dalet team here!
