Virtualization - is it always best? And is cloud a one-size-fits-all solution?

How can hardware accelerators help?

Finding the right balance between virtualized infrastructure and optimising your in-house data centre keeps all IT-driven organizations constantly innovating.

I like to be told that I'm wrong. It usually means that I've made some broad sweeping assumption that over-simplifies the world. My most recent blunder was assuming that the whole world will obviously move 100% of its media operations to the cloud. It seems to me that in the space of a few short years, the media industry has changed its mindset from cloud is unsafe through a brief dally with cloud is good and has now ended up with everything cloud as the way to go. 

Considering current global events around mobility and remote working, this is a highly topical discussion.

 

One-size-fits-all solutions do not exist!

In the unused bit at the back of my brain, I know that there is no such thing as a one size fits all solution, but at the same time I cling to the everything cloud marketing philosophy as some kind of justification for forward motion. Very often, it's a mix of technologies that gives the best performance for a given price and it's the ability to choose the right technology at the right time for the right job at the right price that ensures that any business continues to thrive.

Transcoding is a curious business. To select a service or a device, you first must be sure that it meets your needs for scaling, deinterlacing, frame rate conversion, image filtering, SDR and HDR conversion, range of codecs, compression efficiency and compression quality. In today's time-pressed environment choices are often done with a service rate card rather than by testing with real content and real people. This is a shame because very often the idea of taking a high-quality device with a Capex price tag is eliminated, even though the per-transcode costs of an alternative service can be higher for a lower quality.

 

Nothing is ever simple - what's the real business problem?

So why all this heavy philosophy? Dalet asked me to look at a hardware accelerator for an offline transcoder. I initially thought that I had stepped into a time machine because that sort of solution is just not fashionable now. I stopped and thought about it for a while in the context of todays reduced operating margins, remote infrastructure requirements and ever-increasing platform support requirements.

If you have a fixed and stable volume of content that needs to be converted every day / week / month then actually the costing of that core transcode is a key fixed cost of the business. If a hardware accelerator reduces that fixed cost with a one-off investment rather than a pay as you go continuous commitment, then it is a no-brainer providing you still have a local data center to house it and you have the ability to manage it remotely.

 

There is a business sweet spot for accelerators!

So I found myself looking at an HEVC encoding accelerator, connected to a cloud-enabled Dalet AmberFin transcode farm and realized that it was the right solution for many customers to fulfil their core needs of doing a lot of transcoding for the minimum TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). Like many things in engineering, it might not be fashionable or glamorous, but for the right application it makes good business sense. 

It serves the needs of working and managing remotely, since you can build a hybrid architecture that works in the background and yet, can be accessed anytime, anywhere, assuming your data center has some solid business continuity in place (let’s face it, who doesn’t these days?) 

As 2020 makes its way, with major issues at global scale, it seems that there is a sweet spot for hardware accelerators - high throughput with less energy consumption than a raw software solution. It also seems that I should avoid jumping on today's fashionable technology for everything and to keep my mind open to a wider range of practical solutions to solving real business problems!

What is HDR, WCG and Dolby Vision and why does it matter?
Alphabet soup starring HDR and WCG "Hey Guys, let's re-invent the entire TV and Cinema chains from Camera to Screen!" said no high-ranking executive in any board meeting ever. The whole concept sounds like crazy talk when you say it out loud, but in reality that's what the High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wide Color Gamut (WCG) revolution have done over the recent years. We've moved on from glowing goop The cinema world, shooting on film, has always had a little more freedom that the TV world when it comes to controlling brightness, color and contrast between the camera and the screen. There were limitations in physics and chemistry, of course. You could make the projector brighter assuming you didn't melt the film and you could make the film more sensitive provided you liked that grainy look on the screen. The TV world, however had a fixed and inflexible transmission infrastructure that was stabilized in the 1950s. The relationship between the photons going into a camera and the photons coming out of most of today's TV are still based on the response characteristics of the glowing goop you find inside CRTs (Cathode Ray Tubes) of that early era. So in comes HDR. "Hey guys the eye can capture about 14 stops of brightness so let’s transmit that." is the fundamental idea behind HDR. In a basic MPEG system, the brightness of most pixels is represented by a number between 0 and 255. This gives you the ability to represent 8 stops (28 values) whereas we would like to represent 214 values in our HDR chain i.e. the brightness of each pixel is represented by a number between 0 and 16383. Sounds simple really. But, what is Dolby Vision HDR? Let's redesign the entire Cinema and Broadcast Value chain The complexity comes with making sure that each and every device in the value chain from camera through switcher and ingest and transcode understands what these new numerical values actually mean. In an ideal world we would replace all the old kit with brand new kit, but that's not really practical so the HDR systems that were created have compatibility modes to allow these new bright, colorful pixels to travel across traditional SDI, H.264 and IP transmission paths with good integrity to appear at the final display to show wondrous pictures. Now, what is Dolby Vision HDR? Dolby Vision is one of the HDR systems that requires metadata to work. Its trick is identifying that in any typical scene you only use a portion of the total available dynamic range. A dark shadowy scene in a cave will need more bits allocated in the small numerical pixel value ranges. A bright seaside scene on a sunny day will need more bits allocated in the large numerical pixel value range. This scene by scene adaption is enabled with metadata that tells each device how to behave for that scene. The Dalet AmberFin team is really proud that it's the first software only transcoder and workflow engine to have full support for the Dolby Vision system. It can do this in a wide range of different codecs in parallel with the usual array of high quality video processing functions from scaling to Standards Conversion. The Dolby Vision metadata itself might be carried in a sidecar XML file or embedded within the media file as a data track. Whichever mechanism is used, it's vitally important to retain the synchronization between the metadata and the images to get the best results particularly when aligning metadata changes to hard cuts in the video. This becomes doubly important when frame rate converting because blended frames and mis-timing of metadata combined are highly visible, highly annoying and consume a lot of bitrate in the final encoding. Cupboards full of tapes and reels have migrated to the cloud. And “supervising” all of this is a Media Asset Management system (MAM). Files are not physical things, and that opens up an incredible range of possibilities, but, because you can’t store non-physical things on shelves, you need an all-embracing MAM system like Dalet to keep track of all the ephemeral properties of millions of blobs of data. In a traditional model, the broadcaster/partner would need to email a request for materials. MAM Moves to the Cloud – Dalet has a View
The Cloud changes everything else in broadcast and since most MAMs are not cloud-native, will cloud kill MAM as we know it? Kevin Savina, director of product strategy, Dalet answered all your questions. Who actually makes money from MAM? Organizations using Media Asset Management (MAM) to increase their financial bottom line usually do so by reducing costs, increasing revenues or a combination of both. The big question is: how do we measure that? As you know, big questions often come with multiple answers... In this case, the main issue is that measuring the Return on Investment (ROI) of the implementation of a new MAM solution is not an easy task, because there is no baseline to measure it against. At Dalet, we believe the value can be measured. First let’s define what we mean by MAM. Dalet define it as the platform that helps with the management of an organization’s media assets, cataloging assets for search, browse and retrieval. When properly used, the MAM should be the primary access point for ingress, access and egress for media in the organization. The productivity boost from a properly designed catalog is the ability to find things when you need them and retrieve them for use as quickly as possible. The second key aspect of a modern MAM platform is the ability to orchestrate workflows to create value from these assets. MAMs that offer ‘If This, Then That’ (IFTTT) type of policies enable organizations to automate and keep tabs on all kinds of processes, including ingest operations, review & approvals, transcoding, automated QC and media distribution. Even at the basic IFTTT level, the ability to have a system route media within the organization has the value of eliminating wasted time (tasks no longer sit for a human resource to trigger or operate them), as well as providing limited reporting on proper completion. A well-designed MAM system with IFTTT policies will be able to report on the processes that were started and completed by this policy control. We can see the value brought by these platforms from two angles: Reducing operational costs by automating processes and facilitating human operations, through the cataloging of assets on one side and the orchestration of workflows on the other side. Increasing revenues by providing the ability to produce more and better content and/or to deliver this content to more outlets, thus maximizing the value of assets. Dalet customers who have implemented MAM systems have been able to substantially increase their productivity by a factorx4 to x6, and expand their content distribution by a factorx8 to x11. Has MAM delivered on its promises? From our point of view, the fact that a MAM project delivers on its promises is based on a combination of factors: - On the end-user side: Are the expectations well understood? Have the end-user needs been well taken into account? Is the choice of the vendor / solution motivated? Has the project been well managed? - On the vendor side: Is the product appropriate for the needs? Has the project been well managed? The issue isn’t so much whether MAM has delivered on its promises, but whether or not specific vendor promises of what a MAM is actually capable of, beyond the catalog, were fulfilled. There are numerous examples of vendors that have over-promised MAM capabilities for the ability to integrate with external metadata sources, interoperate with third-party systems, handle specific media formats and data models, or manage specific workflows. How does the Cloud change things? The Cloud implies multiple things at once: Virtualized machine instances Machines that are not in the local data center Storage that is not in the local data center Business rules to create and deploy machine instances and storage when required (i.e. elasticity) Billing models that align with operations, based on subscriptions or ‘pay for what you use’ Media customers are choosing to utilize some or all of these items as they implement a ‘cloud’ workflow. In some cases, they want media transformation and distribution to run as close to the edge as possible, thus lowering their costs of distribution. In other cases, we’re seeing entire pre-production workflows operate in the cloud in order to provide elastic costs to match job order billing. Cloud changes things in the sense that it adds a whole new level of flexibility to MAM deployments. Things that used to be fixed and constrained can now be used as needed. For example, cloud allows for: Flexible, dynamic and scalable IT infrastructure (compute or storage), with new pricing models IaaS/PaaS/SaaS models and access to new cloud-related services - for example Artificial Intelligence (AI) Just as there is no one definition of ‘cloud’ there is no one ‘cloud’ implementation or business model that is right for every customer. Vendors should be prepared to talk about each of the items the ‘cloud’ makes possible and discuss how their solution can fit within the customer needs. Point 1 impact is that MAM solutions need to support this new type of infrastructure. This is a new generation of infrastructure. The broadcast industry started with proprietary, ad-hoc hardware, then moved to off-the-shelf IT systems (servers, storage). Cloud is a similar change. Point 2 is the real game changer as it has real operational and business impacts. The core of MAM products is not impacted by such change. Assets will continue to be referenced in a system and tools will still be required to process the content. What is impacted is the eco-system around the MAM, which can now become much more dynamic. A MAM should be able to leverage cloud services so that users can benefit from the cloud through the MAM. And there again orchestration will be a key component, giving the ability to provision, control and monitor the various services available. Can you simply virtualize a MAM in the cloud and make it a success? The ability to successfully virtualize a MAM in the cloud obviously depends on how you measure success. We see success as customer-driven, not vendor-driven. If a customer wants to migrate their existing workflows and software licenses to an external datacenter for the purposes of offloading hardware management and gaining simpler, high availability / disaster recovery scenarios, virtualizing the existing MAM would be 100% appropriate. Some of our customers have been fully virtualizing their MAM solution for years and consider the project a success. Of course, simply virtualizing your existing MAM infrastructure and hosting it in a cloud environment (public or private) doesn’t gain the other cloud benefits of elastic business rules and elastic costs. To truly enable these items, MAM and workflow orchestration systems built around them should be architected to enable individual processes to be created and deployed as business needs require them, which requires that vendors have knowledge of the cloud platform the customer has chosen in order to properly create either a virtual machine instance or virtual container host, clone the proper process, start the machine/container, start the process and connect it to the central system (and of course, the opposite, when the business need expires). How do you architect asset management for the cloud without losing a lot of money? Like anything in a software organization, you start by listening to your customer’s needs, and then you build the pieces necessary to fulfill those needs. Controlling costs in software builds is a matter of two things: Proper architecture and planning up front Good project management to control engineering processes and minimize the impact of external changes Does MAM have a future? If so, what form will it take and why? MAM catalogs are an essential part of media operations, and they are not disappearing. Media organizations will always need to be able to search, browse and retrieve their media assets, retaining metadata from the interaction with external systems, and enabling workflow orchestration on top of those media-aware data models. Tapping into the deep, multi-layered data model of MAM platforms such as Dalet Galaxy, internal or external reporting and analytics tools allow users to analyze vast amounts of data and offer Business Intelligence (BI) specifically tailored for media operations in order to measure performance throughout the chain and build sound data-driven strategies. This is one of the keys to growth for media organizations who greatly benefit from the agility and accessibility of the Cloud. Smart vendors see the cloud as an enabler of new business models, providing customers what they want, when they want it. MAM needs to move from a solution to a smooth part of a business workflow. For a MAM to be future-proof, it must enable more and more workflows around it, provide a high level of agility, and last but not least, be easy to integrate.
