Julien Decaix, general manager, Americas, Dalet, with Carlos Abrahao, support manager, TV Globo, and Julio Lima, project manager, TV GloboDalet Digital Media Systems, a leading provider of software-based solutions for media organizations, has announced that TV Globo, the world's second-largest commercial TV network by annual revenue, is placing Dalet Media Life, based on the award-winning Dalet Galaxy Media Asset Management (MAM) platform, at the heart of its entertainment archive.

The world's leading producer of telenovelas (soap operas) is deploying an end-to-end archiving and content preparation workflow utilizing all three Dalet platforms: Dalet Brio for high-density ingest and Dalet AmberFin high-quality transcoding, all under the control of Dalet Galaxy enterprise MAM to enable the manipulation of digital files for archive purposes for all entertainment content (including telenovelas) produced at the network's Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo hubs. The Dalet installation will also enable the distribution of content to internal and external users.

“We produce a vast amount of content each year, including telenovelas and promos, and wanted a means of increasing the efficiency and enhancing the production values of our operations with a comprehensive file-based workflow from ingest through to archive,” explains Thiago Abreu, project manager at TV Globo. “The solution had to work effortlessly with our legacy systems, prove itself extensible to accommodate our rising production and distribution demands, and it had to promote collaborative workflows by opening up our production silos. We are confident, along with Sony, our primary partner on this major project, that we have found the answer in Dalet.”

 

Ranked as one of the biggest media companies in the world, TV Globo produces around 2,400 hours of entertainment annually and reaches 99.5% of the Brazilian population through its network of 122 owned and affiliate TV stations. The network's international operations include seven pay-per-view TV channels and a production and distribution division that distributes domestic sports and entertainment content to more than 190 countries around the world. The organization's studio production base is located in Jacarepaguá, Rio de Janeiro, and known locally as Projac.

The solution at Projac is systems integrated by Sony Professional Services and architected to extend TV Globo's file-based workflow from ingest into archive. Sony selected the comprehensive Dalet Media Life solution, which includes a broadcast-specific Business Process Management workflow engine, advanced production and media preparation tools, and a single and centralized content repository for housing multimedia content. The complete solution also includes Dalet Brio for ingest acquisition and QC playback as well as Dalet AmberFin for transcoding.

The Dalet platforms interlock with a number of industry-standard, third-party tools to underpin production end-to-end. These include integration with Avid Interplay and Avid Symphony for production, with Tektronix Cerify for file-based QC review, and with Front Porch DIVA and Sony’s Optical Disc Archive System.

“This is Dalet's first major deal in Brazil and is hugely significant given TV Globo's superlative reputation for content production and distribution, not only in South America, but globally,” says Julien Decaix, general manager, Americas, Dalet. “File-based workflow at the broadcaster's entertainment production headquarters was previously only within an Avid environment, but in alliance with Sony and TV Globo, we are able to manage all digital files and all associated metadata as well as legacy tape content, on ingest and throughout the asset's entire lifecycle, including export for all internal and international distribution and onwards to the Sony Optical Disk Archive. This new workflow, based on Dalet's business solution encompassing all three main platforms, embraces TV Globo's fast-paced production environment, operations and business, and streamlines the amount of work needed by the broadcaster's prolific production division day-to-day.”

Content is ingested directly into the Dalet Galaxy content catalog and automatically transcoded by Dalet AmberFin nodes during ingest from the Sony SStP format to XDCAM HD 50. Web-based search and browse of material is enabled by Dalet Webspace clients while, thanks to a set of Dalet Xtend modules, media can be browsed, previewed and exchanged smoothly to and from Avid Interplay.

Dalet solutions and products are designed form the ground up around open-IT standards, enabling TV Globo to develop integration with Dalet using the SOAP Dalet API. This enables media to be migrated fluidly from TV Globo's existing MAM database.

IMF, Bacon and Bicycles - Dalet at HPA Tech Retreat 2019
Cold desert mornings & IMF conversations! The sound of an alarm clock breaking through the fog of last night's networking in the bar. It's still dark outside, but if I don't ride my bicycle then all those calories will turn me into a heavyweight of the industry. Two hours later, the warm shower has removed all traces of exercise except for the fixed smile of someone descending too fast when the temperature is 1°C. The dining tent at the Hollywood Professional Association Tech Retreat smells of bacon and coffee and I arrive 5 minutes early at the IMF DPP table. Rowan de Pomerai and myself have arranged this breakfast table to discuss the IMF activities of the DPP, especially the first SMPTE Technical Specification TSP 2121-1 that covers the use of ProRes in IMF. Welcome to the IMF DPP table... Good and bad news awaits me. I am early (a miracle), but the table is already full and there is no more space. This is great. It shows that there is genuine interest in the practical issues of IMF adoption from studios, broadcasters, vendors, post houses, content creators and just about everyone in the value chain. The conversation is wide ranging and covers key topics and highlighting the fact that IMF is concerned with the business of automating the content supply chain. Dalet's interest in the format should be obvious. A large company with a great track record in Asset Management, Media Orchestration and Cost optimization for its customers is pretty much a definition of what a standard like IMF is seeking to improve across the industry. "Why ProRes in IMF?" was the first big question and really it's all to do with efficiency. The BBC and many European companies have a lot of high quality original material in ProRes. Transcoding it to J2k before processing the high quality master seems like it would add cost without adding value, so ProRes was added to IMF. Dalet Galaxy five and Dalet AmberFin both handle ProRes MXF and DPP’s IMF flavor of TSP-2121. "Why a Specification and not a Standard?" was the next biggy. Fundamentally, the DPP wanted a document that could reference non-standards (like a SMPTE RDD and the way in which Control-Track audio description is used in the UK). The DPP wanted something with more public scrutiny than an RDD, but something that could be changed more dynamically than a full standard. This reflects the fact that the use of IMF in the TV market is likely to be quite dynamic for the first few years. As a result the DPP delivered the first of SMPTE's Technical Standards. IMF adoption and the API project Over the rest of the hour (and during the breakfasts on the next two days), we discussed adoption of IMF, the need for timeline metadata to allow program segmentation, the carriage of proxies and the identification of people on set. We discussed the provision of on-screen signing for the deaf and testing of the different IMF standards and specifications. On the final breakfast we discussed the new API project http://imf-mm-api.cloud. This counts Dalet as one of the project supporters and seeks to allow IMF applications to locate and use content managed by Asset Management Systems that might be local or remote. Open source code is due to be available at NAB 2019. Just before 9am, the gentle melody of the Breakfast Gong is sounded to indicate that we should all file into the Conference Room for the day's keynote. HPA Tech Retreat is a truly unique type of conference where deep discussions on real topics take place. The mindset of the entire industry changes direction at this conference every year. There is a lot that can be learned from the broadcast industry when it comes to optimizing the way you produce, manage and distribute media assets. While not an exhaustive list, this blog provides ten things government agencies and institutions should consider when planning to implement a solution to streamline their media operations. Metadata, Metadata, Metadata As organizations increase the amount of media content they store, that content can only be managed and used at its best if it is properly classified, easily discoverable and immediately available where and when needed. The first basic action to enable this is to associate rich metadata to it. Metadata is the key to maximizing the value of your content. Organizations such as NASA and the United Nations leverage their media asset management (MAM) platform to manage their ever-growing metadata needs. Look for a platform that enables flexible, scalable, and secure data models to help meet your current needs while laying an agile foundation for future metadata enrichment challenges. The Power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) One of the fastest growing technology trends to enrich the metadata of your content is through AI. Whether it be speech-to-text, facial recognition or other cognitive services, AI can help your organization automate much of your metadata logging and then offer contextual content suggestions, providing greater content visibility and usage across your entire organization. Building a core framework for AI as part of your MAM strategy will help future-proof your underlying data model for years to come. Collaborative Tools and Workflows Breaking down silos to improve efficiency is a critical objective of many organizations, particulary, government agencies and institutions. Leading MAM platforms help break down those silos by enabling agile, connected workflows that increase productivity for digital content operations. Bringing broadcast archives to life!
"AI is not just about cataloging and preservation, it’s about connecting your content to opportunity.” Jean Gabriel Minel, Head of Research and Development for the French National Audiovisual Institute (INA) This quote sums up particularly well the key theme at the FIAT-IFTA World Conference held last month in Venice, Italy, and hosted by the RAI at the Palazzo Labia, a 17th century palace. Renowned for its exchange of ideas and best practices in archival science, the international symposium provided attendees the opportunity to discover innovative, AI-powered content management and archiving use cases and learn more about the latest technology trends from leading broadcasters, media organizations, and technology companies. As a Gold Sponsor participant of the FIAT-IFTA World Conference, I was honoured to attend and represent Dalet. I had a chance to speak with attendees and show them how advanced content management, workflow orchestration, and best of breed AI services can better preserve, enrich, share, and monetize their archival content. With the combination of virtually limitless cloud storage and computing power, a new era is upon us. Many of the attendees I met were archivists who hold degrees in library studies and have advanced knowledge of content lifecycle and asset management systems. During the conference, these tech-savvy content gatekeepers presented on how they are pioneering the use of AI to further enrich archived content in order to increase accessibility and generate new business opportunities. Many demonstrated that with automatic content discovery capabilities, media organizations can better monetize archival content and leverage their assets to gain a competitive edge over new entrants on their markets. Applying AI to Media Workflows - The Need for a Plan I found that most of those presenting about AI at the conference were trying to solve a similar issue: surface content easily to users with limited human intervention in logging the content. I can relate to this, as over the past 12 years working for Dalet, I have taught many of our customers about the importance of properly tagging content. With our latest generation toolset I now educate users on how to discover content that they need for their creations; should it be for creating promos, documentaries, news packages or highlights for sports. I was honoured to present “The Dalet Living Archive: Utilizing AI in Archive Workflows” and demonstrate how Dalet solutions help media organizations streamline their workflows, reduce costs, and empower content creators with new tools to research, craft, deliver and promote their quality content to audiences on all platforms for consumption. In the presentation, I demonstrated how Dalet Media Cortex automatically enriches content with AI services for: facial recognition speech to text entity detection content moderation object recognition OCR detection. I showed that enrichment of the content triggers Dalet workflow orchestration to auto-create promos or highlights, and turn the AI-generated speech-to-text data into subtitles. I also showed that while a journalist types a story, Dalet Content Discovery detects entities such as people, places, and organizations as well as concepts, and then recommends content from the library with similar tags. A Winning Example - Bundesliga Fußball Archives Sportcast, a subsidiary of DFL (Deutsche Fußball Liga), which oversees the largest digital football archive in the world, manages the entire value chain from stadium to the world with the Dalet Galaxy Media Asset Management (MAM) and Orchestration platform. Sportcast has built a Media Portal on top of their Dalet system to connect and monetize all of the Bundesliga assets, leveraging the latest Dalet Orchestration technology to automate media processes and deliver more efficiently their partners. With a grueling production schedule of 617 games each year, Sportcast is piloting AI-based indexing to optimize logging workflows and further enrich the massive amount of incoming content. <iframe width="100%" height="400" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6Y2wKPtTYAQ" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> With great powers come great opportunities... In addition to the Sportcast case study, there were other very interesting use cases presented at the conference, including the development of Visual Searches at the RAI, Ontology detection at RTVE, and facial/organization detection at RTS. The BBC demonstrated a new system that discovers content based on historical, cultural and other topical references linked to that particular day and publishes it to social media. They demonstrated how the system retrieved a funny clip from the 1950s for International Egg day. The asset would have never been found with a conventional search. The BBC’s AI system found it and within minutes automatically published it to Twitter. At the FIAT-IFTA World Conference, just a few months after they posted the Egg video, it had received 15 million views, further demonstrating how you can give life to old content. With AI giving us so much data about an asset - thousands of tags for less than a minute of video for instance - a concern was brought up at the conference: would it become too difficult to choose content that is actually relevant? The short answer, with the development of new tools utilizing faceted search capabilities, content discovery, workflow orchestration and auto-creation of content, the user decides what is important, giving viewers so many possible angles to the same story. Prestigious awards for innovative projects Held at the Scuola Grande San Giovanni, the FIAT-IFTA Gala Awards Ceremony recognized a number of Dalet customers including Danish Radio, SBS and RAI.
