Time Warner Cable Launches YNN in Buffalo with Dalet News Suite

Local news channel YNN in Buffalo has implemented Dalet News Suite system as its newsroom and automation system

Dalet announced today that “Your News Now” (YNN) in Buffalo, the latest news channel for Time Warner Cable’s Local News Division, has implemented Dalet News Suite system as its newsroom and automation system. YYN covers regional news, weather and sports, 24-hours per day. Viewers can find live breaking news, weather every ten minutes as well as in-depth coverage of Western New York news, politics and sports. In coordination with other Time Warner Cable news channels, YNN provides news from across the state including the acclaimed “Capital Tonight” program direct from Albany weeknights at 8PM. The Dalet driven workflow integrates the entire production, automation and archiving operations, including Panasonic P2 download and feed ingest, news editing at the desktop and wheel playout from Omneon MediaDeck media servers.

“We launched this new channel with an extremely aggressive budget and timeline. With Dalet’s intuitive technology, we were able to get our staff trained and ready to go in about six weeks.” said Steve Paulus, SVP and General Manager, TWC News division. “With the Dalet editorial workflow configured to our needs, we have one powerful production platform that allows us to produce news content around the clock on an incredibly cost effective budget and with a small but efficient staff.”

“We are very excited to participate in this innovative Time Warner Cable project that is reshaping the way local news is provided to communities,” said Benjamin Desbois, General Manager, Dalet USA. “Dalet’s news production platform is key to YNN operations, allowing the station to produce a considerable amount of local news content with a team of anchors and “digital journalists,” who shoot and edit their own video. We admire the ability of TWC staff and YNN journalists to embrace the model, implement it and launch a channel in such a short amount of time.”

YNN’s format is modeled on the hour news wheel used at other TWC news channels. The Dalet media asset management platform combines the production editing tools with advanced rundown management and automation. The technical platform operates on a gigabit Ethernet backbone and includes Netapp production storage, two Omneon MediaDecks which are used for ad hoc ingest as well as main and redundant playout, and a Xendata HSM system connected to a single LTO tape drive. The fully digital workflow relies on Dalet’s comprehensive logging tools, flexible metadata forms, and fast search and browse engine. The full featured Dalet newsroom modules provide editorial tools for planning, rundowns, wires, and scripts. Desktop editing, shot selection and package assembly are available at any of the twelve Dalet workstations. There are also a few Dalet clients at other remote TWC locations. Final Cut NLEs are used for advanced craft editing for promo material. Dalet OnAir controls video playout on both Omneon MediaDeck servers as well automatic triggering of Chyron CGs.
