NY1 News Goes on Air 24/7 With Dalet’s Integrated News Production Platform

Time Warner Cable implements Dalet Enterprise Edition for integrated news production and playout automation at NY1 News

Dalet announced that NY1 News, the flagship news channel for Time Warner Cable’s Local News Division, has implemented Dalet Enterprise Edition for integrated news gathering, production asset management and distribution. Known for providing the best local news coverage in New York, NY1 News is available to over three million cable subscribers (broadcasted) 24-hours a day on Time Warner Cable throughout New York’s five boroughs, as well as most of upstate New York and in parts of New Jersey. The installation of Dalet provides NY1 News a single vendor software solution that blends comprehensive newsroom system functions with advanced playout automation capabilities, establishing a file-based production and broadcast infrastructure that enables NY1 to better manage content production and localized news delivery.

“There are significant advantages to going with a single software vendor solution such as Dalet. We do not have to piece together applications and live with the shortcomings of integration workarounds. Features and components are fully integrated across our platforms. We deal with one company, learn one application with many feature sets, and benefit financially by maintaining one system,” said Joe Truncale, VP Operations and Engineering, NY1. “We worked closely with Dalet to develop many production and assignment desk features to maximize our news gathering and distribution efficiencies. Unlike the previous applications, Dalet provides complete access to content and tools with an infrastructure to manage exchanges and processes. We have a modern platform that keeps up with the way we produce the news.”

Dalet’s unified platform provides NY1 News contextual tools for logging and searching materials, editing packages, managing rundowns, and facilitating content distribution across multiple channels and platforms; including NY1 News, NY1 Noticias, and New York 1 on Demand. Technical complexities associated with conversions, migration, and metadata management are automated by Dalet’s underlying media asset management (MAM) framework and workflow engine. The state-of-the-art workflow provides continuity for NY1 News’ highly collaborative news production format in which reporters shoot, edit, and write their stories. It also enhances their playout and content distribution capabilities by providing an integrated pathway for sharing content with sister Time Warner Cable stations and other broadcast outlets.

To manage the 24-hour news schedule, NY1 News follows a unique news wheel format. The standard wheel begins with a NY1 Minute, followed by a brief weather forecast and news reports. Coverage is localized for five regions and supplemented throughout the day with a slate of live news, sports and public affairs programs.

“Dalet merges news production and distribution management into one application, removing the interoperability barriers triggered by systems using MOS protocol. The integrated production and playout automation capabilities enable NY1 News to simultaneously manage multiple playlist wheels with the flexibility of updating a local news slate on the fly…. from one application, using one resource. Changes are as simple as dragging and dropping the story title into the wheel,” explains Benjamin Desbois, General Manager, Dalet USA. “Because Dalet’s production, planning, scheduling, and playout capabilities live on one platform, content is ubiquitous and easily distributed to traditional TV, VOD, Mobile and Web. This is much more conducive for the way NY1 News manages their content.”

The Dalet Enterprise Edition installation fully integrates and manages multiple Omneon ingest and playout servers, an Omneon MediaGrid™ shared production storage, and several Chyron CG applications. Dalet also integrates Apple® Final Cut Pro® editing workgroups and a VCI traffic system for a contiguous system and sub-system workflow. Developed on open standards, Dalet’s highly scalable architecture fully integrates third-party production and distribution systems, ensuring seamless media migration from ingest to archive.
