A number of technology trends got the lion’s share of buzz and display at IBC’s 50th edition: cloud and smart hybrid infrastructure, video over IP, workflow orchestration and automation, and last but not least big data, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI). As game-changing as they can be, we believe that these are in fact enablers of a much bigger trend: better serving and engaging with audiences.


Content discovery for consumers

It is well documented that the success of online video relies, in part, on metadata. Metadata-centric workflows give viewers the freedom to become more engaged. They can discover and explore more content, navigating directly to the most interesting scenes (including the intent of the scene, e.g. serene, suspense, etc.).


Publishers can fully monetize viewer habits and experiences in the most effective way possible with a Media Asset Management (MAM) & Orchestration platform that allows end-to-end authoring and managing asset metadata in their production workflow. For on-demand video consumption, accurate description of content is key to help narrow recommendation engines to more relevant suggestions. For ad-based or product placement models, metadata helps define the optimal in-stream video insertion points, allowing publishers greater control and flexibility with their advertising strategies. Scene metadata such as character name, player name, topic, keyword, etc. become key. The more accurate and rich the description of these insertion points, the better the advertisers can pick the slots that fit both their target audience and the brand experience they look to create.


Metadata-driven operations & workflows

Today, metadata is also at the heart of the orchestration of workflows and automation of processes, both of which become increasingly important to streamline and scale production and distribution operations. Any process and/or action in the chain of operations can be triggered by any change or fulfillment of a condition on any of the fields of the data model. These configurable metadata-driven workflows are extremely powerful. While the industry has moved away from the simplicity of "one profile per customer", we can today create an environment where a single workflow can produce all the desired outputs just by changing the metadata that initiates a particular process.


Managing complex media objects

Metadata is core to structure and manage complex media objects and their relations, to enable operations like versioning and packaging of track stacks or compositions. To enable better collaboration and flawless content transformation and curation, organizations need to disintermediate the supply chain. One of the key concepts is to avoid the confirmation of a project or a composition until it actually needs to be packaged for an output. To enable this, media management platforms need to handle complex objects seamlessly so that users can work directly with the elementary components of a media package or project. This gives them the ability to manipulate, transform, share and repurpose content in a very efficient and agile way - a concept called transclusion. Effortless Content Discovery for Faster News and Richer Stories
As you might remember, the first post of this series focused on how Smart Captions can automate 80% of your captioning and subtitling work, generating additional revenues. We now focus on how Dalet Media Cortex can vastly improve your content discovery experience, helping you unearth valuable content effortlessly. The Pro and Enterprise versions of Dalet Media Cortex introduce users to a unique experience with the Dalet Discovery Panel. The tool is designed to automatically surface recommendations for relevant media within your Dalet Galaxy five system, which is related to the content you are working on. What can discovery search do for me? Well, two things for starters. First, it will search content automatically, based on the context of your story as you type it. Dalet Media Cortex surfaces relevant media that is not currently part of your Story MediaBin. Secondly, it provides entity identification. This means that you’ll get an understanding of certain terms such as people, locations, organizations and events with descriptions, illustrations, and weblinks coming from Bing or Google Knowledge Graph. What’s the functionality behind it? The Dalet Discovery Panel is currently available in Dalet Galaxy five’s Planning Editor and Story Editor, and consists of three parts: Keywords: Dalet Media Cortex suggests a collection of keywords, key phrases and relevant IPTC NewsCodes. These are specific to the recommendations it provides you with. As you continue to write your story, the keywords become more precise. Recommendations: other stories, media or wires are suggested in order of relevance. This section is constantly updated based on suggested keywords. MediaBin (a topic for a separate blog post!): recommendations are tightly integrated into your MediaBin If one of the recommendations is of particular relevance to your story, you can simply tag it to move it from your recommendations list to your MediaBin. What is in it for me? The Dalet Discovery Panel automatically surfaces content that you would not have easily found manually. This allows you to create deeper, richer and more meaningful news stories, with a wider range of sources. An efficient and easy way to maximize the use of your archive! Additionally, it saves you searching time! The Recipe for Smart Captions with Dalet Media Cortex
Why caption? Why subtitle? Because a large chunk of your audience either needs or prefers to watch video reading text without sound. Subtitles and captions are an essential part of business for any media organization who wants to reach the widest possible audience, for a multitude of reasons: legal requirements, international distribution, accessibility.... Captions provide a textual representation of dialogue and other important audio for people with hearing loss. They also give the viewer additional information about the video, such as context for a news clip. Subtitles provide a translation of the dialogue, essential to reach international markets. So, we all agree captions and subtitles are key, but... creating them is hard. First, you need solid speech-to-text transcription so that the right words are created from the audio stream. As many of us who have been working with this technology for a while quickly learnt, this is not enough. There is the complicated business of correctly segmenting, laying the text out, punctuation, timing and so on, often creating much manual work for captioning and subtitling teams.
