Ben: The one comment that has stuck with me from the show was, “It’s nice to have a focus on technology after all the mergers and acquisitions of last year!”

I don’t think it’s fair to say that the industry stopped innovating or releasing new products last year, it’s simply that the news and talk at both last NAB and IBC was largely around the quantity and nature of all the M&A activity and, as a result, many key developments were overlooked.

This year, not only did we start to see some of the benefits of the merging of disciplines and technologies, such as the combination of the Dalet Galaxy Workflow Engine and Dalet AmberFin transcoder, but also some significant steps forward in support of 4K/UHD workflows, IP and virtualization.

Kevin: Being another busy NAB, I had very little time to walk the floor. But in meeting a lot of present and future customers and partners, I noted two key takeaways.
It seems that our industry is getting out of all the Cloud “buzz” and entering a time where there are actual professional applications for it. It feels like everyone is much more educated around the topic of Cloud. Broadcasters, media organizations and vendors alike understand better the challenges and opportunities that it brings from a business point of view, and how it can / should fit in their operations. I think we are finally in a position where we can start to use the cloud for smart workflows and was really happy with the warm reception for our various cloud initiatives, particularly the showcase of our “Newsroom in the Cloud.”

Collaboration was another major highlight at the show. Everyone seemed highly interested in the topic. In Dalet systems, we have been implementing and promoting collaboration tools for many years, whether in the facility, across different locations or for users on the field. But this year, the interest and feedback we received about our latest improvements (like bringing some social collaboration tools into the professional world) was way beyond any response we’d gotten in the past. Having various talents collaborating to produce better content seems now to be a priority for our customers, and I’m happy we are in as good a position as ever to help them do it.

Bruce: Many discussions of how to ready a business for UHD and whether that UHD would be higher resolution, higher frame rate, higher dynamic range, higher colour profiles or all of the above led to discussions on IMF – the interoperable mastering format. Personally I find this to be excellent news. Seven years on from specifying AS02, it is reassuring to see it reborn with shiny SMPTE IMF specifications and a better understanding in the industry as to the commercial benefits of working with media in a componentised form. Seeing the level of understanding amongst our customers leads me to believe that the transition to IT thinking is now firmly in train. No longer is “IT-based” a technology that you buy, it is a way of architecting and thinking about the business problems to be solved.

Stephane: It is interesting to see that this industry continues to evolve rapidly year after year. Information technology is an integral part of the future of radio and television. In the early days of Dalet, I used to say informally that our mission was to bring the best of IT technology to the broadcast and media industry. This continues today with Cloud-based solutions, IP distribution, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Business Process Management, and Dalet is at the forefront of that trend, bringing innovations that are changing and improving the workflows to produce and distribute content.

Constant change indeed, but with the need to link the old and the new, whether in formats, protocols, or workflows, to preserve valuable content produced in the past and make it available on an ever-increasing range of distribution platforms. These are factors of complexity: Will IT help us resolve these challenges? At Dalet we believe that emerging new standards and industry initiatives such as IMF or FIMS should help reduce that complexity. The whole industry should take part and benefit from these efforts.

Bruce summarizes: The big takeaway for me from both the show and this discussion is that there is no single dominant technological driver any more – there are a number that are pushing and pulling the industry in different directions. No single human can understand every nuance of the technological drivers, and so community education becomes more and more important. The great turnout that we had for all the free Dalet Academy presentations and workshops is a testament to the fact that our customers, partners, competitors and newcomers to the industry all need access to the latest information. I can't predict the future, but I can be confident that the breadth of our work here at Dalet is helping prepare a broad section of the industry to be ready for that future.

Why newsroom production has to adapt NOW to the new normal
Fierce competition for viewers along with a rapidly changing multiplatform environment has put newsrooms under immense stress. In the space of just a few weeks, news broadcasters have had to discard a lifetime’s worth of practices and hard-earned experience as anchors and reporters are dispatched to their homes where they continue to broadcast, but not always with the same technical finesse as viewers are accustomed to. And yet viewers are adaptable and readily accepting this vastly more ad-hoc content, while still appreciating high quality production where it’s possible. At the same time, as experienced broadcast practitioners deal with the fastest and most dramatic changes of their lifetimes, video is being distributed on more platforms, to more devices, in more places than ever. Viewers rely on traditional broadcasters Despite all of this, viewers still rely on traditional broadcasters. Even though social media is encroaching, when it comes to news, the world turns to familiar faces and channels. In fact, according to the Edelman Special Trust Barometer Report on COVID-19 (March 2020), the most relied-on source of information is mainstream news organizations: the major news outlets are relied on nearly twice as much as global health organizations (like WHO) or national health organizations (like the CDC). 54% of young people rely on social media and 56% on mainstream media, while people ages 55+ rate mainstream media as nearly three times more reliable than social. In the face of the new, socially-distanced reality, broadcasters have little choice but to rapidly pivot towards remote workflows, not just because this is an emergency, but because this could easily become the new normal. News moves from Hub to Home Until recently, the big challenge blocking a viable in-the-field or remote editing workflow was the costly and somewhat limiting infrastructure that was needed for even the most basic working system. Dedicated hardware, additional layers of security for accessing the central storage hub, and the difficulty of navigating VPNs limited broadcasters’ ability and willingness to deploy and scale at will. Vital collaboration between users was poor or lacking completely. To address these challenges, Dalet Galaxy five supports cloud-based workflows, using “intermediate media” to reduce performance issues and leverage cloud-based infrastructure to scale. Working in the cloud this way also reduces security issues as there is no need for a VPN or any VDI-like connection or a direct connection to the main content hub. This approach, which minimises overheads and keeps costs low, is immediately attractive to broadcasters and media companies, while giving editors and journalists a much better experience in the field and when working from home. Journalists can mix the content from the central hub with their local content (media on a laptop or desktop). But remote working - and even presenting - is today’s reality. The world can work efficiently anywhere. The benefits of this type of workflow are many - too many to list in our blog. Virtualization - is it always best? And is cloud a one-size-fits-all solution?
I like to be told that I'm wrong. It usually means that I've made some broad sweeping assumption that over-simplifies the world. My most recent blunder was assuming that the whole world will obviously move 100% of its media operations to the cloud. It seems to me that in the space of a few short years, the media industry has changed its mindset from cloud is unsafe through a brief dally with cloud is good and has now ended up with everything cloud as the way to go. Considering current global events around mobility and remote working, this is a highly topical discussion. One-size-fits-all solutions do not exist! In the unused bit at the back of my brain, I know that there is no such thing as a one size fits all solution, but at the same time I cling to the everything cloud marketing philosophy as some kind of justification for forward motion. Very often, it's a mix of technologies that gives the best performance for a given price and it's the ability to choose the right technology at the right time for the right job at the right price that ensures that any business continues to thrive. Transcoding is a curious business. To select a service or a device, you first must be sure that it meets your needs for scaling, deinterlacing, frame rate conversion, image filtering, SDR and HDR conversion, range of codecs, compression efficiency and compression quality. In today's time-pressed environment choices are often done with a service rate card rather than by testing with real content and real people. This is a shame because very often the idea of taking a high-quality device with a Capex price tag is eliminated, even though the per-transcode costs of an alternative service can be higher for a lower quality. Nothing is ever simple - what's the real business problem? So why all this heavy philosophy? Dalet asked me to look at a hardware accelerator for an offline transcoder. I initially thought that I had stepped into a time machine because that sort of solution is just not fashionable now. I stopped and thought about it for a while in the context of todays reduced operating margins, remote infrastructure requirements and ever-increasing platform support requirements. If you have a fixed and stable volume of content that needs to be converted every day / week / month then actually the costing of that core transcode is a key fixed cost of the business. If a hardware accelerator reduces that fixed cost with a one-off investment rather than a pay as you go continuous commitment, then it is a no-brainer providing you still have a local data center to house it and you have the ability to manage it remotely. There is a business sweet spot for accelerators! So I found myself looking at an HEVC encoding accelerator, connected to a cloud-enabled Dalet AmberFin transcode farm and realized that it was the right solution for many customers to fulfil their core needs of doing a lot of transcoding for the minimum TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). Like many things in engineering, it might not be fashionable or glamorous, but for the right application it makes good business sense. It serves the needs of working and managing remotely, since you can build a hybrid architecture that works in the background and yet, can be accessed anytime, anywhere, assuming your data center has some solid business continuity in place (let’s face it, who doesn’t these days?) As 2020 makes its way, with major issues at global scale, it seems that there is a sweet spot for hardware accelerators - high throughput with less energy consumption than a raw software solution. It also seems that I should avoid jumping on today's fashionable technology for everything and to keep my mind open to a wider range of practical solutions to solving real business problems!

IMF, Bacon and Bicycles - Dalet at HPA Tech Retreat 2019
Cold desert mornings & IMF conversations! The sound of an alarm clock breaking through the fog of last night's networking in the bar. It's still dark outside, but if I don't ride my bicycle then all those calories will turn me into a heavyweight of the industry. Two hours later, the warm shower has removed all traces of exercise except for the fixed smile of someone descending too fast when the temperature is 1°C. The dining tent at the Hollywood Professional Association Tech Retreat smells of bacon and coffee and I arrive 5 minutes early at the IMF DPP table. Rowan de Pomerai and myself have arranged this breakfast table to discuss the IMF activities of the DPP, especially the first SMPTE Technical Specification TSP 2121-1 that covers the use of ProRes in IMF. Welcome to the IMF DPP table... Good and bad news awaits me. I am early (a miracle), but the table is already full and there is no more space. This is great. It shows that there is genuine interest in the practical issues of IMF adoption from studios, broadcasters, vendors, post houses, content creators and just about everyone in the value chain. The conversation is wide ranging and covers key topics and highlighting the fact that IMF is concerned with the business of automating the content supply chain. Dalet's interest in the format should be obvious. A large company with a great track record in Asset Management, Media Orchestration and Cost optimization for its customers is pretty much a definition of what a standard like IMF is seeking to improve across the industry. "Why ProRes in IMF?" was the first big question and really it's all to do with efficiency. The BBC and many European companies have a lot of high quality original material in ProRes. Transcoding it to J2k before processing the high quality master seems like it would add cost without adding value, so ProRes was added to IMF. Dalet Galaxy five and Dalet AmberFin both handle ProRes MXF and DPP’s IMF flavor of TSP-2121. "Why a Specification and not a Standard?" was the next biggy. Fundamentally, the DPP wanted a document that could reference non-standards (like a SMPTE RDD and the way in which Control-Track audio description is used in the UK). The DPP wanted something with more public scrutiny than an RDD, but something that could be changed more dynamically than a full standard. This reflects the fact that the use of IMF in the TV market is likely to be quite dynamic for the first few years. As a result the DPP delivered the first of SMPTE's Technical Standards. IMF adoption and the API project Over the rest of the hour (and during the breakfasts on the next two days), we discussed adoption of IMF, the need for timeline metadata to allow program segmentation, the carriage of proxies and the identification of people on set. We discussed the provision of on-screen signing for the deaf and testing of the different IMF standards and specifications. On the final breakfast we discussed the new API project http://imf-mm-api.cloud. This counts Dalet as one of the project supporters and seeks to allow IMF applications to locate and use content managed by Asset Management Systems that might be local or remote. Open source code is due to be available at NAB 2019.
