The first in a new generation of smart assistants for journalists boosts usage of content, fosters collaboration and augments editorial workflows.

Dalet, a leading provider of solutions and services for broadcasters and content professionals, today announced the introduction of Dalet Content Discovery, a new module of the Dalet Galaxy five Workflow Orchestration and MAM platform that leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to build smart content recommendations for editorial and creative teams. First brought to market as part of the Dalet Unified News Operations solution, Dalet Discovery Board presents to journalists intelligent and contextual suggestions, providing greater content visibility and utilization across the newsroom.

Dalet Content Discovery leverages automatic content tagging, topic extraction and key phrase searches, orchestrating a combination of Auto Indexing and Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology. “Dalet Content Discovery aims to aid and enhance newsroom research efforts, surfacing what’s relevant for a given topic and storyline from the pool of exponentially increasing sources and inventory of content,” Kevin Savina, director of product strategy, Dalet. “The first of a new generation of powerful assistants for journalism, Dalet Content Discovery combines the power of AI and ML technology with the advanced data model, the orchestration capability and a new AI integration framework of the Dalet Galaxy platform in order to not only tag and index, but also align, relate and suggest content in a contextual and meaningful way.”

Reducing the time-consuming process of manually searching for news story assets, Dalet Content Discovery intelligently sources and serves content, providing editorial resources relevant material including clips, videos, stories, pitches, wires and multimedia content as the journalist develops their story. The expanded detail enriches the news narrative with new insights and angles.

The augmented media workflow starts automatically in the background with Dalet Galaxy orchestrating several types of cognitive services. Scripts and media assets are automatically enriched, generating tags that the platform then uses for smart contextual recommendations to the users, as well as for automated data-driven processes.” Savina continues, “The journalist launches Dalet Content Discovery Board, which displays suggested content that matches his/her assignments or work in progress. The suggestions automatically refresh when new relevant assets are entered into the system. Presented suggestions can include production assets, archived assets, studio guests, assets in use for other news stories as well as other similar topic stories that may be scheduled or have already been broadcasted.”

The intuitively designed Discovery Board gives journalists a snapshot of similar news stories that are in motion. This naturally invites journalists to collaborate with their colleagues on similar story topics. Savina comments, “Collaboration across departments is a common challenge especially among large, multisite news organizations. With Dalet Content Discovery, journalists covering similar story beats, whether it be for TV, online or even radio, can easily connect on topics that require collaboration while still keeping controlled access to sensitive stories.” The visual snapshot of newsroom activity on any given topic also lets news directors easily view various story angles across different departments, allowing them to better balance the overall news lineup.

The Recipe for Smart Captions with Dalet Media Cortex
Why caption? Why subtitle? Because a large chunk of your audience either needs or prefers to watch video reading text without sound. The Evolution of Sports Broadcasting – Wimbledon as a Case in Point
We have seen an abundance of live streams available to watch Wimbledon for several years. Take Virgin Media for instance – the broadcast channel surprised everyone in 2019 by announcing that it would be offering its customers access to all of the big matches on Centre Court in 4K with HDR. This was a strategic move for Virgin Media, by timing it around one of the flagship sporting events of the year it helped to increase subscriptions and provide its customers with a high-quality viewing experience. Meaning that the broadcaster remains relevant and a viable option and platform for people to enjoy major sporting events, creating a competitive edge against its market competitors. Content supply chain control Wimbledon had predicted the rise in new technologies a couple of years ago and set up its own broadcast division to future-proof its control over technology, content, and engagement. In the past, Wimbledon’s broadcasting rights was outsourced to the BBC; The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), Wimbledon’s organizer, had limited access and control over The Championship’s content. It was therefore an obvious decision, in 2017, for AELTC to announce that Wimbledon Broadcasting Services (WBS) will have full ownership of the TV cameras and broadcast output internationally. This was a sports industry trend at the time, rights holders demanded greater control over their content supply chain. Tennis Australia was a pioneer in bringing TV production in-house for the Australian Open two years earlier. AELTC now oversees its individual stakes and audience engagement in-house, building on its existing stakeholder relationships (whilst staying friends with the BBC) and exploring new revenue streams. The BBC still maintains exclusive rights to Wimbledon’s broadcast in the UK, but it will no longer have any say on production costs. The Championships is now capable of maximizing on its wealth of legacy content, in addition to new and archived material - an average of three matches per court, each day, video from matches can add up to hundreds of hours of footage. Bringing broadcast archives to life!
"AI is not just about cataloging and preservation, it’s about connecting your content to opportunity.” Jean Gabriel Minel, Head of Research and Development for the French National Audiovisual Institute (INA) This quote sums up particularly well the key theme at the FIAT-IFTA World Conference held last month in Venice, Italy, and hosted by the RAI at the Palazzo Labia, a 17th century palace. Renowned for its exchange of ideas and best practices in archival science, the international symposium provided attendees the opportunity to discover innovative, AI-powered content management and archiving use cases and learn more about the latest technology trends from leading broadcasters, media organizations, and technology companies. As a Gold Sponsor participant of the FIAT-IFTA World Conference, I was honoured to attend and represent Dalet. I had a chance to speak with attendees and show them how advanced content management, workflow orchestration, and best of breed AI services can better preserve, enrich, share, and monetize their archival content. With the combination of virtually limitless cloud storage and computing power, a new era is upon us. Many of the attendees I met were archivists who hold degrees in library studies and have advanced knowledge of content lifecycle and asset management systems. During the conference, these tech-savvy content gatekeepers presented on how they are pioneering the use of AI to further enrich archived content in order to increase accessibility and generate new business opportunities. Applying AI to Media Workflows - The Need for a Plan I found that most of those presenting about AI at the conference were trying to solve a similar issue: surface content easily to users with limited human intervention in logging the content. I can relate to this, as over the past 12 years working for Dalet, I have taught many of our customers about the importance of properly tagging content. With our latest generation toolset I now educate users on how to discover content that they need for their creations; should it be for creating promos, documentaries, news packages or highlights for sports. I was honoured to present “The Dalet Living Archive: Utilizing AI in Archive Workflows” and demonstrate how Dalet solutions help media organizations streamline their workflows, reduce costs, and empower content creators with new tools to research, craft, deliver and promote their quality content to audiences on all platforms for consumption. In the presentation, I demonstrated how Dalet Media Cortex automatically enriches content with AI services for: facial recognition speech to text entity detection content moderation object recognition OCR detection. I showed that enrichment of the content triggers Dalet workflow orchestration to auto-create promos or highlights, and turn the AI-generated speech-to-text data into subtitles. I also showed that while a journalist types a story, Dalet Content Discovery detects entities such as people, places, and organizations as well as concepts, and then recommends content from the library with similar tags. A Winning Example - Bundesliga Fußball Archives Sportcast, a subsidiary of DFL (Deutsche Fußball Liga), which oversees the largest digital football archive in the world, manages the entire value chain from stadium to the world with the Dalet Galaxy Media Asset Management (MAM) and Orchestration platform. Sportcast has built a Media Portal on top of their Dalet system to connect and monetize all of the Bundesliga assets, leveraging the latest Dalet Orchestration technology to automate media processes and deliver more efficiently their partners. In addition to the Sportcast case study, there were other very interesting use cases presented at the conference, including the development of Visual Searches at the RAI, Ontology detection at RTVE, and facial/organization detection at RTS. The BBC demonstrated a new system that discovers content based on historical, cultural and other topical references linked to that particular day and publishes it to social media. They demonstrated how the system retrieved a funny clip from the 1950s for International Egg day. The asset would have never been found with a conventional search. The BBC’s AI system found it and within minutes automatically published it to Twitter. At the FIAT-IFTA World Conference, just a few months after they posted the Egg video, it had received 15 million views, further demonstrating how you can give life to old content. With AI giving us so much data about an asset - thousands of tags for less than a minute of video for instance - a concern was brought up at the conference: would it become too difficult to choose content that is actually relevant? The short answer, with the development of new tools utilizing faceted search capabilities, content discovery, workflow orchestration and auto-creation of content, the user decides what is important, giving viewers so many possible angles to the same story. Prestigious awards for innovative projects Held at the Scuola Grande San Giovanni, the FIAT-IFTA Gala Awards Ceremony recognized a number of Dalet customers including Danish Radio, SBS and RAI. I’ve been thinking and reflecting on how to properly characterize this year’s show and the one word that kept surfacing to the top of my mind is audience. While IBC stayed true to its B2B roots, this year’s edition finally put the audience at the very center of every conversation, workflow and applied technology demonstration that you could possibly find across the RAI convention center. Acknowledging the deep market shifts, this year’s show revolved around audiences’ insatiable craving for fresh content and more personalised, immersive experiences on the devices and channels of their choice. For broadcasters and media organizations, it highlighted one thing: the need for greater agility, faster adaptation and collaborative innovation. Not only do media professionals need to think “out of the box” about linear broadcast and traditional consumption formats and devices, but they need to think tactically on how to build meaningful, complementary content experiences. The Efficient Media Factory Multiplatform Production, Versioning and Automated Distribution This is a good segue to talk about how our agile Dalet Galaxy five platform is enabling broadcasters and media organizations to meet their audiences’ expectations and build strong, open foundation for future requirements. Metadata is “The New Gold”!
Plain and simple. Some might categorize the above statement as an exaggeration, nevertheless, we persist! A number of technology trends got the lion’s share of buzz and display at IBC’s 50th edition: cloud and smart hybrid infrastructure, video over IP, workflow orchestration and automation, and last but not least big data, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI). As game-changing as they can be, we believe that these are in fact enablers of a much bigger trend: better serving and engaging with audiences. Content discovery for consumers It is well documented that the success of online video relies, in part, on metadata. Metadata-centric workflows give viewers the freedom to become more engaged. They can discover and explore more content, navigating directly to the most interesting scenes (including the intent of the scene, e.g. serene, suspense, etc.). Publishers can fully monetize viewer habits and experiences in the most effective way possible with a Media Asset Management (MAM) & Orchestration platform that allows end-to-end authoring and managing asset metadata in their production workflow. For on-demand video consumption, accurate description of content is key to help narrow recommendation engines to more relevant suggestions. For ad-based or product placement models, metadata helps define the optimal in-stream video insertion points, allowing publishers greater control and flexibility with their advertising strategies. To enable better collaboration and flawless content transformation and curation, organizations need to disintermediate the supply chain. One of the key concepts is to avoid the confirmation of a project or a composition until it actually needs to be packaged for an output. To enable this, media management platforms need to handle complex objects seamlessly so that users can work directly with the elementary components of a media package or project. This gives them the ability to manipulate, transform, share and repurpose content in a very efficient and agile way - a concept called transclusion.
