10 Things Government Organizations Should Know to Streamline their Media Operations
Does your organization have a difficult time managing and searching for its content? Are you keeping multiple copies of media files on storage devices that aren’t shared or fully searchable? Did you miss GV Expo 2018 in Washington D.C. back in November? If you’ve responded yes to at least one of these questions, you should definitely read this article!

Streamline your media operations

Discover with Eric Radloff, Sales Manager at Dalet, 10 Things Government Organizations Should Know to Streamline their Media Operations.

Government organizations and institutions are facing steep challenges to efficiently manage the massive amounts of multimedia content and associated metadata needed to fulfill their mission to actively reach, inform and better engage with citizens. To overcome these challenges, they require proven solutions that meet their demanding requirements in terms of efficiency, agility, security, cost, and integration.

There is a lot that can be learned from the broadcast industry when it comes to optimizing the way you produce, manage and distribute media assets. While not an exhaustive list, this blog provides ten things government agencies and institutions should consider when planning to implement a solution to streamline their media operations. Most of these topics were actually part of discussions I had with customers and partners at GV Expo 2018. If you were not able to attend the show don’t hesitate to contact me to discuss further!

Metadata, Metadata, Metadata

As organizations increase the amount of media content they store, that content can only be managed and used at its best if it is properly classified, easily discoverable and immediately available where and when needed. The first basic action to enable this is to associate rich metadata to it. Metadata is the key to maximizing the value of your content. Organizations such as NASA and the United Nations leverage their media asset management (MAM) platform to manage their ever-growing metadata needs. Look for a platform that enables flexible, scalable, and secure data models to help meet your current needs while laying an agile foundation for future metadata enrichment challenges.

The Power of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

One of the fastest growing technology trends to enrich the metadata of your content is through AI. Whether it be speech-to-text, facial recognition or other cognitive services, AI can help your organization automate much of your metadata logging and then offer contextual content suggestions, providing greater content visibility and usage across your entire organization. Building a core framework for AI as part of your MAM strategy will help future-proof your underlying data model for years to come.

Collaborative Tools and Workflows

Breaking down silos to improve efficiency is a critical objective of many organizations, particulary, government agencies and institutions. Leading MAM platforms help break down those silos by enabling agile, connected workflows that increase productivity for digital content operations. Collaboration needs to span across the entire workflow (from planning through scripting, production all the way to broadcast and distribution) with a unified content catalogue, shared media bins and powerful chat features.

Multiplatform Distribution

Given the high number of outlets to feed and the speed at which content should be produced and delivered, managing the distribution of content is a complex exercise. Media organizations such as Voice of America need to push their content all around the globe and engage audiences on multiple platforms. Most advanced MAM platforms, such as Dalet Galaxy five, provide these organizations a level of transparency for their media management, allowing users to quickly access their content and distribute it wherever they need in whatever shape they need.

Ensure Scalability

With content acquisition increasing, building your operation on a proven, scalable architecture to manage volume is critical. State-of-the-art media operations require unparalleled transparency of content between storage tiers. With a cloud-ready architecture, you are also able to take full advantage of scalability mechanisms to make significant savings on your infrastructure. MAM based on a distributed architecture can be adapted to the level of functionality your organization requires as your needs evolve.

ITAM Security

Poor asset control and management can lead to weakened content security. As much as possible, organizations need to seek to control their assets from a single platform. The better control and visibility your organization has over its assets the more it reduces the risks posed by outside threats. Managing disparate storage units, preventing unauthorized access to content, and auditing every user and system action on every piece of content should be centralized and made simple. The Dalet Galaxy five platform can be deployed in a FedRAMP-compliant service environment, and is ISO 27001:2013 certified. With Active Directory (AD) integration, you benefit from a centralized management of users and rights. In addition to tightly integrated user authentication, system auditing provides a log of actions performed by users.

Gain Workflow Efficiencies

Not all MAM solutions are created equal and not all natively integrate orchestration capabilities, which are crucial for automating content transactions that can otherwise bog down the operation. Dalet’s workflow orchestration engine allows you to streamline your organization’s media lifecycle processes for quicker delivery of your content. The engine orchestrates many human tasks and automates background processes that fast-track the end-to-end content preparation and distribution workflow.

Library Management & Archiving

From small to large-scale organizations, a well managed, accessible and connected archive is an essential and valuable part of any content operation. Realizing this importance, Dalet offers end-to-end Archive solutions to optimize your workflow and to maximize your assets.
Dalet’s highly flexible Archive solutions manage all types of multimedia content, including video, audio, texts, documents and more. Making media easily accessible and findable from any location through a web, mobile client or third-party system is key to your workflow success!

Actionable Business Intelligence

Once your organization has a rich set of data complementing your assets, it’s critical to leverage the data to help optimize your operations as well as drive actionable insights. By compiling relevant analytics, organizations can replicate editorial success based on reports of content usage, better understand your organization’s key impacts based on analytics of consumption, better use talent based on information about productivity, and enhance technical infrastructure based on technical information gathered. The Dalet Report Center gives government organizations what today’s business demands: a business analytics solution that is truly enterprise-ready.

Will MediaBins save the world? (hint: probably not, but they’ll greatly simplify your media life!)
I mentioned in a previous blog post that I wanted to spend more time talking about Dalet’s MediaBins, as they can completely transform your production workflow, so let me tell you more… So, what’s a MediaBin? Commonly used in news and sports production workflows, a MediaBin is a collection of media that is attached to a story and travels through its entire lifecycle, through to distribution and archiving. What can I put in my MediaBins? You can store any kind of media that is stored inside your Dalet Library. Audio, video, pictures, a collection of assets, audio and video clips, graphic objects, wires, RSS posts, social media posts, contacts, Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint files, etc.), PDFs, or PDF-ed emails and external web links/objects such as YouTube videos. This collection of media is there to help the journalist and video editors to create their story. Who can feed a MediaBin? Any Dalet user! Usually, you start feeding the MediaBin during the planning phase. Even an event has its MediaBin before it becomes a story. A Planning Editor, for instance, might add a couple of social posts and a wire that are relevant to a particular event. The Chief Editor decides to make it a leading story. Some footage is coming from user-generated content and is attached to the story in addition to the original material via the MediaBin. Then additional material arrives from the field – it is attached to the MediaBin, and so on. Anyone can contribute to the MediaBin, which is also accessible by librarians, so they can also organize archived content into the MediaBin. Even feed recordings can be placed directly in the MediaBin, so there is a connection between what’s coming in, and the story. How I can use a MediaBin? Obviously, you can consult your MediaBin at any time while you work on your story. You can also search for MediaBins and within MediaBins, including filtering. You can open a MediaBin in a video editor, whether Dalet OneCut or Adobe Premiere Pro through Dalet Xtend, so that you can focus on the relevant material (audio, video, images, graphics, …) saving considerable editing time! So not only is the MediaBin a real collaboration entity attached to your story, it can also be used within the extended Dalet ecosystem. And there’s more… Yes! Dalet’s Recommendation Panel brings Artificial Intelligence to help you feed the MediaBin. Thanks to a deep semantic analysis of stories, wires, audio and video transcripts, the Dalet Recommendation Panel suggests media that is not yet stored in your MediaBin. This surfaces content you would have not likely identified before and help you find relevant material for your story much quicker. So there you have it… The Dalet MediaBin brings you speed, efficiency and relevant content so you can create compelling stories. No wonder so many of us at Dalet are enthusiastic about it! In a future blog post, I’ll tell you more about Dalet Recommendations, as we’re working on set of new algorithms that will bring our users a whole new experience – a true game changer… Watch this space! AI-powered productivity! When Speech-to-Text Technology makes you a Super (Media) Hero
Speech to text technologies are brilliant. Last October we discussed how speech-to-text technology can produce excellent out-of-the-box captions as part of Dalet Media Cortex, Dalet’s AI service platform. To complement this Dalet offering, we have now developed Speech Editor, a caption editor that allows you to easily adjust any captions. It is available on Dalet Galaxy five Windows client and Dalet WebSpace, at any step of your production workflow. It only takes a few clicks to adjust wording, fix typos or reposition captions on the screen. Fabulous - we now have an end-to-end captioning workflow! Edit captions easily with Dalet Speech Editor Do you want to save time? Speech Editor also features a transcript view that will save you hours of precious production time. If you need to browse through a long video file, say a 2-hour interview, you can simply browse through the transcript and capture interesting sequences just by browsing through the transcript. Rough cut leveraging automatic captions You can highlight soundbites, easily create clips and save them to your MediaBin (we’ll soon be writing another blog post on the subject of MediaBins, as they can completely transform your production workflow!). So, not only you’ve pocketed yourself free time, but you facilitate collaboration by sharing the best highlights with the rest of the editorial team. <iframe width="100%" height="415" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/pYsomrAGZeM?start=93" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> But wait, there’s more… If that wasn’t enough, when you index your media with Dalet Media Cortex, it will also create added-value metadata such as keywords and content classification, making it easy for you to find content in future. Dalet Media Cortex brings you all-in-one AI: Besides advanced Speech-to-Text technology, you get the benefits of automatic indexation while getting captions, and vice versa. And thanks to productivity-driven workflows such as text-based interview editing, you truly will gain weekly time savings. And in case you were wondering, all these SaaS, cloud-based services are accessible through Dalet WebSpace anytime, anywhere, including your home office.

The marks certify that all Dalet products and solutions are developed, configured and deployed according to stringent DPP cyber security best practices across R&D, code safety, and operational measures. As early adopters of DPP compliance and security initiatives, both Dalet, and Ooyala - now part of Dalet - have worked with the DPP on certification and security initiatives since 2014. The company also attained its ISO/SEC 27001:2013 certification in 2018, earning the highest level of security practices across Dalet internal development processes, its product line and its practices. “Security has always been of paramount importance at Dalet. With media organizations quickly pivoting their operations to enable work from home scenarios, security has taken on an even higher level of urgency for our customers,” states Rami Pinku, Dalet Deputy General Manager, R&D Operations. “Our commitment to developing and delivering highly secure solutions that embrace industry best practices is stronger than ever. Dalet security processes start from the moment we begin developing our solutions to the time they’re delivered. We are proud to have achieved the DPP’s security marks for our solutions as these are key criteria for media organizations investing in enterprise-grade workflow solutions.” Achieving the DPP security marks demonstrates Dalet’s commitment to working towards and adhering to cyber security best practice across its entire solution range. Participants are assessed according to a rigorous set of controls specifically applied within the categories of Production, including policies and procedures, physical security, incident planning, recovery management, IT security, business continuity and other areas; and Broadcast, including documentation & testing, authentication and controls. Dalet Strengthens Remote Creative Workflows with New Proxy Editing for Adobe Premiere Pro
Dalet, a leading provider of solutions and services for broadcasters and content professionals, has released the new version of its Dalet Xtend module, enabling remote proxy editing capabilities within Adobe® Premiere® Pro, an industry leader in video editing. Responding to feedback from Dalet customers, Dalet Xtend for Adobe Premiere Pro remote proxy editing capability now facilitates collaboration between distributed teams making it easier to work across locations and time zones. The new capability streamlines production workflows thanks to its “hub & spoke” approach to collaborative editing. Leveraging proxy quality video, users and teams can continue editing from any location. “Support for remote editing and collaboration capabilities answers the needs of our news and multisite customers requiring in-the-field and site-to-site collaboration. As societies are forced to shift quickly into remote work situations, this capability becomes more critical for all of our customers,” states Kevin Savina, Director of Product Strategy, Dalet. “Over the last few years, we have reinforced our relationship with Adobe and continue to enhance existing integrations while developing new ones to address the most pressing needs of content creators today.” Dalet Xtend for Adobe Premiere Pro lets remote users edit quickly and efficiently, anytime, anywhere in low resolution, with the finished sequence automatically rendered in high resolution back at the production hub. This significant time and resource savings is especially helpful for fast-paced news workflows where journalists need to quickly edit stories on breaking news while it is happening. Additionally, a key highlight of this update is the ability for teams to edit and collaborate remotely; projects can be edited from beginning to end by users in different coasts. The significantly improved Dalet Xtend browser provides users with the same user experience to search and select content, whether they are working within Dalet Galaxy five or within the Adobe tools. Additional key features within the Dalet Xtend module include: Users can work with the same browser view they use in Dalet Galaxy five Users can change story status Users can trigger migration actions / workflows Live content and metadata updates for a selected category New Poster frame and thumbnails New Search/View/Edit MediaBin contents Configurable and resizable columns and views “The Adobe-Dalet integrations enable customers to collaborate across borders and time zones, faster and more efficiently,” states Sue Skidmore, head of partner relations for Adobe video. “Both companies believe in a customer feedback focused approach to feature enhancements, which results in exceptional user experiences that support the full creative capabilities of Adobe solutions.” As part of the continued partnership with Adobe, work is underway to add improvements to the Adobe Panel within the Ooyala Flex Media Platform. The panel allows Adobe Premiere Pro users to search for content managed by the Platform, as well as trigger workflows for publishing and syndication. New capabilities are being built into the panel following customer feedback. For more information go to https://www.dalet.com/modules/dalet-xtend and https://www.dalet.com/partner/adobe. Mexican Media Giant TV Azteca Captivates Viewers Across Digital, Social and Terrestrial Channels with Dalet
Dalet, a leading provider of solutions and services for broadcasters and content professionals, today announced that TV Azteca, Mexico’s leading multimedia conglomerate, has deployed Dalet Galaxy five to reinvigorate the company’s content supply chain and deliver robust programming options faster to its audiences across all traditional, digital and social platforms. The highly popular media group offers a wide range of entertainment programming including, series, live musicals, thematic programs and sports. In addition to the diverse schedule, TV Azteca delivers news 18 hours per day through a network of local stations across the country. “The goal of TV Azteca’s ambitious transformation was to connect the digital content traffic for TV with the digital platforms and deliver to our audiences programming options that encompass the breadth and depth of our news reporting, and the entirety of our outstanding media catalog. Dalet Galaxy five gave us the technical capabilities to build this innovative media production ecosystem, with the workflow acceleration to engage with our audiences in real-time,” explains Pedro Carmona, CTO of TV Azteca. “The project execution was remarkable and the resulting impact immediate. The TV Azteca operation went from a manual process, where on average it took 10 minutes to get content on-air, to near-instant and often automated real-time delivery of content and programs. The benchmark for improved performance was undeniable and provided us the efficiency required to expand program options for our viewers.” Accelerating workflows by a factor of ten, TV Azteca implemented alongside Dalet Galaxy five highly mobile and collaborative production tools such as Dalet OneCut and Dalet WebSpace. The robust solution streamlines content production field to facility, enabling more than 50 journalists to more efficiently prepare stories anywhere in the world. Further fueling the fast-turn workflow are Dalet’s social media connectors which enable users to easily publish content to TV Azteca’s social channels. Seamlessly connected, the integration makes creating and publishing content for Facebook, Twitter and other channels fast and fluid. With several distinct media departments that previously operated in siloed production verticals, TV Azteca powered by Dalet Galaxy five is now fully connected, interweaving workflows from Programs, News, Sports, Archives and Marketing; ensuring content and program information is shared for maximum production and distribution efficiency. Iván Neri, CIO, TV Azteca explains the inefficiencies eliminated by Dalet’s modern workflow design, “We used to manually copy files over from one department to another and this took an enormous amount of time. Dalet Galaxy five automates the entire file migration from transcoding to metadata capture, which is so incredibly important for making content searchable across our archives. Before implementing the Dalet solution, we had duplicates and inconsistencies in content tagging that hindered collaboration and prevented us from maximizing our content’s value. Automating processes and streamlining the workflow allows us to better utilize the rich programming we have stored in our vaults to audiences everywhere in the world.” According to third party consultants hired by TV Azteca, the resulting Dalet-powered media infrastructure reduced production inefficiencies by up to 30% across the operations. “TV Azteca’s approach in designing its new media operations is lightyears ahead,” states Julien Decaix, General Manager Americas, Dalet. “More than overcoming the inefficiencies, they understood that audiences expected to engage with TV Azteca across all platforms and built a highly fluid media ecosystem that enables them to optimize all aspects of production. They now engage their viewers on a deeper level with better and more diverse content options.” For more information on Dalet Galaxy five and Dalet solutions, please visit www.dalet.com. Effortless Content Discovery for Faster News and Richer Stories
As you might remember, the first post of this series focused on how Smart Captions can automate 80% of your captioning and subtitling work, generating additional revenues. We now focus on how Dalet Media Cortex can vastly improve your content discovery experience, helping you unearth valuable content effortlessly. The Pro and Enterprise versions of Dalet Media Cortex introduce users to a unique experience with the Dalet Discovery Panel. The tool is designed to automatically surface recommendations for relevant media within your Dalet Galaxy five system, which is related to the content you are working on. What can discovery search do for me? Well, two things for starters. First, it will search content automatically, based on the context of your story as you type it. Dalet Media Cortex surfaces relevant media that is not currently part of your Story MediaBin. Secondly, it provides entity identification. This means that you’ll get an understanding of certain terms such as people, locations, organizations and events with descriptions, illustrations, and weblinks coming from Bing or Google Knowledge Graph. What’s the functionality behind it? The Dalet Discovery Panel is currently available in Dalet Galaxy five’s Planning Editor and Story Editor, and consists of three parts: Keywords: Dalet Media Cortex suggests a collection of keywords, key phrases and relevant IPTC NewsCodes. These are specific to the recommendations it provides you with. As you continue to write your story, the keywords become more precise. Recommendations: other stories, media or wires are suggested in order of relevance. This section is constantly updated based on suggested keywords. MediaBin (a topic for a separate blog post!): recommendations are tightly integrated into your MediaBin If one of the recommendations is of particular relevance to your story, you can simply tag it to move it from your recommendations list to your MediaBin. What is in it for me? The Dalet Discovery Panel automatically surfaces content that you would not have easily found manually. This allows you to create deeper, richer and more meaningful news stories, with a wider range of sources. An efficient and easy way to maximize the use of your archive! Additionally, it saves you searching time! Consider it an intelligent and complex search query that helps your story evolve… And, the best thing, you didn’t need to scratch your head to build that complex search! When you consider all the stories you may write over a week, automatic discovery will save you hours looking for that elusive content that was essential to your piece! Finally, you stay in control: you can add, delete or modify keywords and IPTC NewsCodes, plus you can pick and choose what recommended content is most suitable for your story. With the Dalet Discovery Panel provided by Dalet Media Cortex, not only you save searching time looking for valuable content, but you also increase your stories’ quality and meaning by bringing in more valuable sources. Introducing Dalet StoreFront: A Frictionless and Secure Way for Media Organizations to Showcase Their Content to Their Clients
Dalet, a leading provider of solutions and services for broadcasters and content professionals, today announced Dalet StoreFront, a new SaaS-based solution that enables Dalet customers to create a content marketplace that offers a familiar shopping experience for their B2B clients, partners and affiliates. Dalet StoreFront manages multi-user access to Dalet MAM stored content with advanced search tools to quickly locate assets, filtered to only show relevant materials to a qualified client. Underpinned by Dalet MAM orchestration engine for content preparation and delivery, Dalet StoreFront creates an optimal content shopping experience that maximizes inventory exposure, repurposing and retail opportunities, bringing value to the overall media operation and business. This service will benefit just about every Dalet customer from news networks sharing assets across affiliates to sports leagues servicing licensees. “As audiences grow at a global scale, so does the need for more content. Maximizing exposure and facilitating discoverability of our customers’ new or untapped materials is more important than ever before,” states Luc Comeau, Market Director for MAM and Supply Chain at Dalet.“However, with this opportunity for increased content ROI comes additional supply chain complexities. Dalet StoreFront enables clients to tap into a rich Dalet MAM inventory with greater efficiency and speed, resurfacing and monetizing otherwise dormant archives, all within the familiar shopping experience that today’s digital shoppers come to expect.” The Dalet StoreFront shopping experience is easily actionable, discoverable through an intuitive browsing and online shopping model, and eliminates the need for back and forth email exchanges. Comeau explains,“Today many media operations rely heavily on unconnected processes to fulfill partners’ and licensees’ requests. Requests for content via email and disparate file delivery services are manually intensive and leave far too many opportunities to repurpose and resell content on the table,” states Comeau. “Dalet StoreFront identifies the ‘shopper’ and presents all of the relevant content options they can choose from, ensuring maximum catalog exposure while keeping content rights intact.” With Dalet StoreFront, licensing content is easier than ever. Content owners can easily identify and tag content rights for their community of licensees as well as establish rights to visitors and potential licensees. Dalet StoreFront secures your rich content inventory by keeping all the source content under the control and management of Dalet MAM. Only after an order has passed through all checks, automated by Dalet Orchestration, can the fulfillment happen, thus creating a segregated browse/shopping experience from the source catalog.
