Introducing Dalet StoreFront: A Frictionless and Secure Way for Media Organizations to Showcase Their Content to Their Clients
Dalet, a leading provider of solutions and services for broadcasters and content professionals, today announced Dalet StoreFront, a new SaaS-based solution that enables Dalet customers to create a content marketplace that offers a familiar shopping experience for their B2B clients, partners and affiliates. Dalet StoreFront manages multi-user access to Dalet MAM stored content with advanced search tools to quickly locate assets, filtered to only show relevant materials to a qualified client. Underpinned by Dalet MAM orchestration engine for content preparation and delivery, Dalet StoreFront creates an optimal content shopping experience that maximizes inventory exposure, repurposing and retail opportunities, bringing value to the overall media operation and business. This service will benefit just about every Dalet customer from news networks sharing assets across affiliates to sports leagues servicing licensees. “As audiences grow at a global scale, so does the need for more content. Maximizing exposure and facilitating discoverability of our customers’ new or untapped materials is more important than ever before,” states Luc Comeau, Market Director for MAM and Supply Chain at Dalet.“However, with this opportunity for increased content ROI comes additional supply chain complexities. Dalet StoreFront enables clients to tap into a rich Dalet MAM inventory with greater efficiency and speed, resurfacing and monetizing otherwise dormant archives, all within the familiar shopping experience that today’s digital shoppers come to expect.” The Dalet StoreFront shopping experience is easily actionable, discoverable through an intuitive browsing and online shopping model, and eliminates the need for back and forth email exchanges. Comeau explains,“Today many media operations rely heavily on unconnected processes to fulfill partners’ and licensees’ requests. Requests for content via email and disparate file delivery services are manually intensive and leave far too many opportunities to repurpose and resell content on the table,” states Comeau. “Dalet StoreFront identifies the ‘shopper’ and presents all of the relevant content options they can choose from, ensuring maximum catalog exposure while keeping content rights intact.” With Dalet StoreFront, licensing content is easier than ever. Content owners can easily identify and tag content rights for their community of licensees as well as establish rights to visitors and potential licensees. Dalet StoreFront secures your rich content inventory by keeping all the source content under the control and management of Dalet MAM. Only after an order has passed through all checks, automated by Dalet Orchestration, can the fulfillment happen, thus creating a segregated browse/shopping experience from the source catalog. Small steps for designers, giant leaps for users! How UX drives growth
With the advent of omnipresent technologies (think smartphones) in our daily lives, free/try apps have transformed the way we make products and the way consumers expect to be served up products that are intuitive and enjoyable. Just like consumers flocking from one social app to the other, a new generation of creative media professionals have adopted, from their personal digital lives, a “try and keep/throw” approach to media tools. i.e., "if I don't like it or can't get my work done, I'll look for another one." As software vendors, we must embrace this change to enrich our user community's experience in their daily work, with minimal distractions from the application, i.e., focus on the craft, not the tools. We have also seen a shift towards putting the emphasis on product design from users' feedback versus historically "Technical experts/Engineer," where the focus was on the technical capabilities of the solution with less importance on usability, complexity, intuitiveness for the persons actually doing the work. Back in the day Back in the day, you had to be an engineer to operate sophisticated technical software. Today you can cut a movie on your iPhone. Not that you would want to, but the fact that the tools are there for the masses has created a baseline from a user perspective, on expectations as to what they want and expect from a product. Today, our media professionals need to work with software tools to tell their story. A UX (user experience)-centric approach in software design focuses on abstracting the complexity to surface and empower creatives. User Experience is at the center of a successful product and a primary axis to our commitment to user/market-driven approach to producing value for our client community. This need for transformation in how software vendors interact with an organization, and users, means putting transformative approaches and processes to dynamically engage with the user community much earlier in the product development stage, from ideation to release, and onwards. Your accelerator to market success The value in implementing a user-driven feedback loop model is a tenfold accelerator to market, with well-received releases that provide incremental value. Ideas are great, but unless tested against the intended audience, the product output generates frustration and dissatisfaction, further introducing new cycles of product iteration. Great designs can have a positive effect on the quality, accuracy, and user satisfaction/adoption of a product. This is what User Experience design practice enables. I want Ketchup, not a workout It is essential to differentiate UX (user experience) from UI (user interface), however. While UX focuses on "how to do something and how something should work" in the most intuitive, precise, and efficient way, UI focuses on the presentation layer and visual appeal of the product. A simple example: a button. UX design is focused on the position, discovery, feedback, and interaction with careful attention in taking into account both previous and following functions. Whereas UI design will focus on how to make the button visible, accounting for the shape, color, and typography to make the user want to press it. Courtesy of the author A great consumer-goods example that emphasizes this is ketchup bottles. When looking at the glass bottle, anyone can attest that it conveys elements of quality and aesthetics; however, the user experience is disappointing to everyone, including my grandmother, having users come up with workarounds for the poor usability. On the other hand, the plastic squeeze bottle, while looking cheap, is immediately intuitive in its use, and the fact that it stands on its cap, further adds a value of being ready to be dispensed by a simple squeeze. The wheel is not enough Credit: Nima Torabi The above example highlights the iteration of design of a user problem statement: "I want a mode of transportation that gets me from point A to point B safely, comfortably and expeditiously". While the top approach addressed the components of the product, each iteration was rendered useless on its own and not adopted (i.e., failed) as it didn't address the user's need. What is vital here are tangible, usable deliverables, or MVPs (Minimum Viable Product). “User experience encompasses all aspects of the end-user’s interaction with the company, its services, and its products.” Don Norman, Nielsen Norman Group (Credited with inventing the term UX) Back to the ketchup bottle, we can see that the first bottle was usable and formed the basis, by allowing feedback, which led to further iterations, each providing more intuitive designs. Note the middle image, where the bottle is now squeezable, would have never been initially designed without this user feedback. It’s all about the user User research is at the center of our approach at Dalet, both for outbound activities (on-site interviews, regular visits to see the product in use, etc.) and inbound (through conducting surveys, facilitating user community forums, etc.). This is the approach we took when we set out to re-design the user experience for our OoyalaMAM, the main user interface for the Ooyala Flex Media Platform: usability and speed were our top goals – but that’s a story for our next blog post. The recently refreshed OoyalaMAM user interface We want to enable our user community to converse and contribute while gaining knowledge and identifying trends that would need to be slated in the roadmap. As part of this user research, we are putting in place forums for the community to contribute, collaborate, and drive innovative ideas at the forefront of our practice. We'd love to have you aboard!

Dalet Inks Deal to Build World's Most Advanced Multi-platform Newsroom with Leading North American Broadcaster
Dalet, a leading provider of solutions and services for broadcasters and content professionals, has signed a landmark deal with a prominent North American broadcaster to build its next-generation, borderless multi-platform newsroom on Dalet Galaxy five. The broadcaster’s expansive operation is a 24-hour all-encompassing news service that includes four distinct traditional and digital news entities dedicated to delivering breaking news to more than 90 million homes. The digital transformation will leverage advanced Cloud and AI technologies and move all production and distribution operations to the cohesive Dalet Galaxy five platform, a unified Media Asset Management (MAM), Workflow Orchestration and Editorial environment. Frederic Roux, vice president of sales, Americas, Dalet, comments on the multi-workflow advantages Dalet Galaxy five offers: “This particular news network is on air 24/7 and what they must deliver is far more diverse than straightforward news shows. They need to produce studio news programs and documentary-style shows, which are much closer to long-form programming workflows and often feature multi-camera productions. In addition, a new kind of storytelling is required when producing for OTT and digital, which adds complexity to the production chain.” Roux continues, “Dalet Galaxy five is able to facilitate standard news, long-form programming and digital workflows simultaneously. The transition to the platform brings immense efficiency to the operation with limitless options to implement future workflows and iterate quickly with new, digital-first initiatives. The consolidation of systems required to drive these disparate workflows will also help optimize the total cost of ownership for the broadcaster. In this era of fast-changing news consumption behavior, our customers need an agile platform that can adapt quickly to their new business reality. This agility is inherent to the Dalet Galaxy five hybrid architecture.” Based on a modern, video over IP infrastructure that uses the SMPTE 2110 standard, Dalet Galaxy five platform leverages the elasticity of the Cloud and offers federated production capabilities enabling the news network to effectively scale remote bureaus, field resources, and workflows at will. Cognitive services integrated with Dalet Galaxy five will accelerate the metadata enrichment of content archives making news assets easier to discover and readily available for creating deeper news stories across all platforms. Thanks to the hybrid architecture leveraging AWS, Dalet Galaxy five will provide native disaster recovery capability by offloading on-premise capacity to the Cloud when needed and processing scalability. “Today’s audiences crave more detailed news information on the viewing platform of their choice, especially for major sporting and political events,” adds Roux. “Broadcasters need a solution that enables them to deliver that deeper coverage whenever and wherever these events take place and create a content journey that engages audiences across all platforms. Dalet Galaxy five industry-leading remote access and editing provides a seamless news gathering and reporting experience enabling journalists to prepare robust multimedia stories whether they are in the newsroom or in the field on assignment.” Dalet Galaxy five will underpin the entire multi-platform production and delivery workflow, integrating key broadcast systems and propelling game-changing field and bureau workflows with a significantly improved remote editing user experience. Dalet Galaxy five’s orchestration capabilities will facilitate metadata-driven operations that automate complex media processes, distribute tasks and streamline workflows, simplifying the technical hurdles of media handling while simultaneously providing staff greater control over assets and monitoring capacities. The Recipe for Smart Captions with Dalet Media Cortex
Why caption? Why subtitle? Because a large chunk of your audience either needs or prefers to watch video reading text without sound. Subtitles and captions are an essential part of business for any media organization who wants to reach the widest possible audience, for a multitude of reasons: legal requirements, international distribution, accessibility.... Captions provide a textual representation of dialogue and other important audio for people with hearing loss. They also give the viewer additional information about the video, such as context for a news clip. Subtitles provide a translation of the dialogue, essential to reach international markets. So, we all agree captions and subtitles are key, but... creating them is hard. First, you need solid speech-to-text transcription so that the right words are created from the audio stream. As many of us who have been working with this technology for a while quickly learnt, this is not enough. There is the complicated business of correctly segmenting, laying the text out, punctuation, timing and so on, often creating much manual work for captioning and subtitling teams. What if you could be smart about captioning and subtitling? What if you had a technology solution that automates most of these editorial decisions applying artificial intelligence to the output of a good speech-to-text engine? Enter Dalet Media Cortex. Over the last few months, our teams have worked tirelessly to improve the quality of our Smart Captions, part of the Dalet Media Cortex Speech service, providing users with high-quality automatic captions and subtitles for their video content. If you are using the Dalet Media Cortex API, Smart Captions will be delivered to you in the form of SRT or TTML files. If you are using Dalet Media Cortex integrated with Dalet Galaxy five or the Ooyala Flex Media Platform, captions will also be displayed as timecoded locators so that users can search and navigate through subtitles and captions easily. What is so special about Smart Captions? We have developed algorithms based on speech density, natural language processing and speaker diarization (the process of partitioning an input audio stream into homogeneous segments according to the speaker identity) to generate captions and subtitles that are as close as possible to the BBC Subtitle Guidelines. This takes care of essential elements in captioning and subtitling: such as text that flows well and is synchronized with the speakers’ voice and cadence, lines that split at natural points based on sentence structure and text length that is properly adjusted to screen size. How does this help you? Beyond the improved quality of these AI-generated subtitles and captions, there are immediate and tangible benefits. You will see the time you spent in adjusting subtitles or captions cut in half, when compared to traditional speech-to-text based solutions. You don’t have an automatic captioning/subtitling system today? Good news: you will save over 80% of your time in generating quality captioning and subtitles for your video content. Besides, having great captions and subtitles will increase the value of your media, and bring you new business opportunities, such as expanding to new markets or increase your online and social media engagement. No doubt Smart Captions is one of the multiple differentiators that makes Dalet Media Cortex an "IBC Best of Show Award” winner. Want to know more? Get in touch with the Dalet team here!
Dalet launches new media platform - a FEED Magazine article
If there’s one point everyone in the media industry can agree upon, it’s that the amount of content that needs to be produced, managed and archived effectively is now growing at an unprecedented rate. For content creators, this means their choice of media asset management (MAM) technology could hardly be more critical. And for MAM developers and vendors, it means an ever-lengthening list of requirements they must work tirelessly to accommodate...Read more Read the full article
The Evolution of Sports Broadcasting – Wimbledon as a Case in Point
We have seen an abundance of live streams available to watch Wimbledon for several years. Take Virgin Media for instance – the broadcast channel surprised everyone in 2019 by announcing that it would be offering its customers access to all of the big matches on Centre Court in 4K with HDR. This was a strategic move for Virgin Media, by timing it around one of the flagship sporting events of the year it helped to increase subscriptions and provide its customers with a high-quality viewing experience. Meaning that the broadcaster remains relevant and a viable option and platform for people to enjoy major sporting events, creating a competitive edge against its market competitors. Content supply chain control Wimbledon had predicted the rise in new technologies a couple of years ago and set up its own broadcast division to future-proof its control over technology, content, and engagement. In the past, Wimbledon’s broadcasting rights was outsourced to the BBC; The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), Wimbledon’s organizer, had limited access and control over The Championship’s content. It was therefore an obvious decision, in 2017, for AELTC to announce that Wimbledon Broadcasting Services (WBS) will have full ownership of the TV cameras and broadcast output internationally. This was a sports industry trend at the time, rights holders demanded greater control over their content supply chain. Tennis Australia was a pioneer in bringing TV production in-house for the Australian Open two years earlier. AELTC now oversees its individual stakes and audience engagement in-house, building on its existing stakeholder relationships (whilst staying friends with the BBC) and exploring new revenue streams. The BBC still maintains exclusive rights to Wimbledon’s broadcast in the UK, but it will no longer have any say on production costs. The Championships is now capable of maximizing on its wealth of legacy content, in addition to new and archived material - an average of three matches per court, each day, video from matches can add up to hundreds of hours of footage. The audience will now benefit from added choice, access to a broader range of content, and ultimately an enhanced user experience across different platforms. A platform for monetization Enter the Ooyala Flex Media Platform, a technology solution that helps its customers future-proof their own levels of control. Whether it’s an existing or new piece of technology that needs integrating into the ecosystem, content retrieval from several sources, or delivering media to more endpoints – the Ooyala Flex Media Platform empowers them to do this, and more. OoyalaMAM enables organizations to manage, search, edit and deliver to multiple destinations; helping them unlock previously untapped opportunities. Once you have full visibility of your content catalog, and how to source it quickly and efficiently, the ability to monetize becomes massive. Today, the Ooyala Flex Media Platform is helping multiple sports organizations such as Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), National Rugby League (NRL), and many more to do exactly this - help take control of their own destiny and have that direct engagement with their fans. The need for speed (and AI) Going back to the focus on efficiency and speed… AI has helped AELTC to successfully streamline its content supply chain in a time- and cost-efficient manner. It not only localizes content for the UK market, but also creates and distributes a significant number of original videos for different markets - delivering an all-round excellent user experience. Organizers will also find additional revenue coming-in from sponsors and global broadcast partners, who now have an augmented library of content to engage with fans. The Ooyala Flex Media Platform, together with Dalet Media Cortex, now provides AI-driven workflows to automatically associate that metadata against the correct content. This hands back valuable time to customers in both financial and delivery terms. Once the metadata has been automatically indexed with Dalet Media Cortex, you can then go into OoyalaMAM and review the metadata and manually add, change, and delete anything that needs that last adjustment from a human intervention. The ability to marry automation and manual workflows gives sports rights holders and distributors a powerful metadata enrichment engine, and allows them to be reassured that their metadata is being correctly inserted. The secret to optimizing speed and efficiency in a content supply chain is to harmonize and manage all its components, making it as flexible and organic as possible. Although this is not an easy feat as Wimbledon and its technology partners have been developing their strategy to improve global fan engagement for 30 years!
