Dalet Radio Suite at CBC - Radio Canada

Enterprise-wide digital radio production and play-out

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation - Radio Canada is the largest digital audio production and broadcast system to have been implemented in the world, with over 2000 workstations spread across 50 sites. Each site ranges from a dozen to several hundred digital audio workstations; two network sites in Montreal and Toronto each have over 500 workstations. Dalet Radio Suite not only provides a unified platform for production and broadcast operations, it integrates with third-party newsroom computer system and broadcast systems so as to ensure media exchange, archiving and content distribution.

Over a hundred Dalet Radio Suite workstations (1) and field laptops (2) are connected to the Dalet server (3) in Moncton, New Brunswick. A Dalet MOS gateway (4) to the Avid iNews newsroom computer system allows journalists to directly reference audiobytes in their rundowns. Thanks to a Dalet Media Gateway (5), selected audio files are transferred to the proprietary Avid Unity storage (6) for use by TV staff. Content distribution is facilitated by the use of Dalet InterWeb (7) which allows authorized users and sites (8) to browse low-bit rate proxies of the whole catalogue and to download on-demand corresponding broadcast material; uploads from the field are also made possible. As for playout, it is ensured by Dalet OnAir workstations in studios (9), as well as from servers located in the Master Control Room (10).
