Airing a wide range of programs in both Welsh and English since 1982, S4C, the public broadcaster for Wales, chose Dalet Media Library to move to a tapeless environment. Dalet Media Library enables S4C to easily create promos and better organize program playout. The Dalet Media Library system automates the ingest process allowing for master copies to be digitized and quality checked. As programs are dubbed, they are indexed in the Dalet Media Library asset manager and stored on standard IT storage for shared access and production by S4C staff. Based on scheduling information, promos and programs are dynamically migrated to video servers for playout.
Programs are ingest locally in DV 50 on two Dalet Ingest for DeckLink workstations (1). Alternatively, ingest can be directly done on the Omneon server (9). As programs are dubbed and quality checked, they are referenced into the Dalet Media Library catalogue (2) and transferred to a Ciprico 1724 Dimedia NAS repository (3). A Windows Media 256 Kbps proxy of High Resolution material is generated dynamically by a dedicated Dalet Conversion Server (4). A total of 15 Dalet workstations (5) can browse the Dalet Media Library catalogue in Windows Media format; five of these workstations allow for shot selections using Dalet Media Cutter. Selected shots are exported to any of the three off-line edit suites (6) for promo production. Once finalized, promos are checked back into the Dalet Media Library catalogue (2 and 3) and a corresponding WM proxy is generated. Program schedules produced from a third party system are automatically imported into the Dalet Media Library catalogue; based on these schedules, corresponding material is migrated from the Ciprico Dimedia repository to the Omneon playout server. Playout automation is ensured by an existing IBIS automation platform.
