The challenge of digital archiving

Audio-visual archiving is in the mist of a radical transformation:
- Legacy carriers are decaying; Early analogue magnetic media is quickly reaching the end of its life expectancy and historical recordings are threatened of destruction;
- Legacy playout devices are obsolete; tape decks designed to support early analogue carriers are no longer manufactured and their maintenance is all the more difficult to ensure that experienced, skilled staff is increasingly difficult to find;
- Acquisition formats are rapidly migrating to tapeless media; new Electronic News Gathering (ENG) use file-based carriers often imported from the IT, computing world; legacy processes are poorly equipped to archive these new material;
- Archives are assets which value is directly proportional to their availability to potential users, consumers and business alike.

As a result of these transformations, broadcasters and content owners increasingly consider the digital transfer of their legacy archives as a priority. This migration is all the more a challenge that digitizing archives requires a change of mindset and open the door to business reengineering issues – from administrating Fort-Knox style tape vaults, archivists and media librarians must learn to manager Ether-based on-line systems.

The solution

The successful implementation of a digital archive system requires a layered system architecture that involves:
- the choice of a digital carrier;
- the selection of a robotic system;
- the adoption of a media mover;
- the implementation of a media asset management system;
- the integration of production and broadcast platforms.

The benefits

As a media asset management provider, Dalet Digital Media Systems provides several key benefits for successfully implementing a digital archive system: 1. Distributed ingest of legacy material; 2. Flexible metadata management; 3. Automated proxy generation; 4. Seamless interface with best-of-breed media mover; 5. Simplified integration with production and broadcast platforms.

ERT (Hellenic Broadcasting Corp)
ERT S.A. (Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation), the national broadcaster of Greece, chose DaletPlus Media Library to digitalize and streamline its entire media archive system.

The ERT, which operates four television channels and twenty-eight radio stations, was faced with the challenge of managing tape-based archives: decaying media, obsolescence of technical infrastructure required to play legacy material, and rarity of skill sets needed to operate past equipments.

DaletPlus Media Library is used by the ERT Digital Documentation Centre (DDC) to ensure the digital transfer, annotation, metadata tagging, management and distribution of Greek audiovisual content. DaletPlus software runs on industry standard IT infrastructure and integrates a variety of broadcast equipments including an Omneon video server and an ADIC tape library so as to provide ERT users with an on-line digital media library.
